Big block or small block?

quick question...Don't laugh...is the 6.2 liter (376 cid) V8 455 in this camaro considered a small or big block?

Pontiac had only one engine size (external dimensions) and it was a big block. Literally large externally. 4.62.

Small blocks like the Ford 302 and Chevy 350 had 4.40 bore spacing (3.80 for Ford) so this and anything smaller like the 4.6 mod motor are all small blocks. Even though internally both Ford and Chevy delivered 400 cid small blocks.

The Rat is 4.84 and since the cid goes up with the radius squared big bores = BIG engines. Stroke for a gas car engine is pretty much limited to 4 inch.

I don't know. Compared other engines "back in the day", I've always thought Pontiac V8s were fairly compact compared to their displacement, especially in the above 350 cubic inch range. So many other of the large CID engines from other makes seemed enormous and bulky compared to a Pontiac.

All related to bore spacing. The line has to drawn somewhere and that is 4.40 bore spacing making the mouse the largest small block. But you are correct from memory the Pontiac was the smallest externally “Big Block”, so it is closer in size to the mouse. The Ford 302 is really a tiny engine.

I think he meant the 6.2L 376ci 455HP LT1

In the end, it is the 5th generation Chevrolet small block
