What is y'alls take on this...

I personally think an engine makes a car. If someone changes the engine on a car then claims they still drive a camaro and their ss is the fastest, I don't really accept that. They have then changed the base equipment that made the camaro what it is.

For instance redline redline (old link) is claiming to try and build the fastest camaro...But they changed the base engine to a 427. I call this cheating.

I think Hennessey builds off the 427 as well.

Anyone have any thoughts? Curious...

It's still a Camaro. I know people that have put LS engines in old Ford coupes, doesn't make them a Chevy

Sure the Camaro has specific engines in its line-up for each model (LS, LT, SS, ZL1, Z/28)... But... a 5th Gen did offer a 427 and so does the Copo current gen offering. GM has a ton of different motors that can all be found in Camaros.

That's all car guys do, mods. Make it better, according to them.

I am sure you know this car guy, look what he did with a white, rusty Oldsmobile. Not only the engine, the whole drive shaft, tranny and frame was modified.

That's a 427 in there too

So I guess I could quite literally put a rocket on a camaro and beat everyone in the world and claim the fastest title. Lol.

I think if you claim you have a camaro, you should have the base parts of a camaro and build up from there.

Not just wear the camaro shell and strap a 632 Merlin inside. Just my two cents :-)

I agree with this. I have a Small Block Chevy in an 1980 Cutlass. Doesn't make it a Monte Carlo.

The engine isn't what makes the car, the body style is. For example, the Camaro and Corvette have the exact same engine, does that make it the same car? No

Also, the Camaro already has 3 engine types, the 4,6 and 8. Does this mean that only the V8 is a Camaro? Also no

Camaro, but not a particular trim.

Ie. You dont have a Camaro SS if you have changed the engine to something not offered as an SS by Chevy.

You dont have a Camaro 1LT if you changed out the drive train for electric or some electric hybrid.

You still have a camaro though in either case. You have just made up your own "trim" when you've made such significant changes. That's basically how factory approved aftermarket versions of cars work.

I don't think it is exactly the same, isn't there a difference something about wet/dry sump?

Plus the corvette advertises 460hp...Just saying.

I understand what everyone is saying, everyone thinks the shell makes the car. I just happen to think the whole package makes the car. Oh well. No biggie.

The only time "fastest" holds any relevance for me is when we're talking off-the-showroom-floor.

Once you break from there, and start talking tuners and heavy modifications, it's just a game of who's got the deepest pockets, which loses a lot of luster for me.

This. Engine swaps are often the way to make more power than the original engine is capable of and doing so doesn't make the car something else.

As a previous owner of a 1966 Toronado - this almost made me cry when I saw it years ago. With all of his resources, he decided to basically only save the body. NOTHING else is original to the car. Engine, transmission, chassis, interior, wheels, everything. He even made it rear-wheel drive...
