Polish before you wax!

One of the most overlooked things by people polishing their cars for the first time is use of light. Without proper lighting, you can't see defects, and you can't correct what you can't see.

Yeah definitely need good lighting. I like to do mine in my garage, have 6500K daylight bulbs in my shop lights in the garage, can see everything on the car then.

Glen,
Where does this step fit in the master doc plan? Or this should be done separately once a year? thanks! |

This step is the BF total polish and seal in the plan for a new car. For a new car you need a polish that is super mild, like TPNS. Meguires 205 replaces TPNS after a year or two when you have a few more micro scratches, swirls, etc. that being said, this is all minutiae, the two are relatively interchangeable.

Just to clarify, I would polish once a year. And if I don't really find a lot of micro scratches, it may be longer than that. All I'm saying is if you're going to detail, and do a major detail, polishing is the secret.

I just polished again about a month ago, not a lot of micro scratches, so I used TPNS this time and it worked great. Will see what next year brings and then change if I need to.

Yup.....most of my micro scratches were at the trunk loading area from general use. It's also why I'm never concerned about using a cover, I'll get to them later in the year. Micro scratches and light swirls are inevitable sooner or later, I don't lose sleep over them like some do....they come right out with an orbital and polish.

Just because you have a new car doesn't mean the paint isn't jacked up.
Here is a pic of a brand new 2016 Camaro, with DISO (Dealership installed swirl option)

This is why using proper light on the paint is so crucial. Finishing polish is not going to remove damage like that. Compound is needed, followed by finishing polish to maximize gloss/depth.
So instead of the paint looking like that, it looks like this, like it should look when it's new.
