Go for it, it's really quite simple to do:
  • The Start button removes from the housing by pressing in 2 tabs, the button will slide right out.
  • Lightly sand the black plastic of the housing to be painted to give the paint something to grab onto.
  • Masking the inside of the housing took a few minutes but makes for a cleaner finished product.
  • Mask the outside of the housing, nothing to it.
  • Spray a couple coats of the color of your choice. Let dry for an hour.
  • Reinsert the button into the housing, it'll click in place with no effort.
  • Reinstall the button into the dashboard.
  • Done, Enjoy!

An update to my painted start button housing:

The paints I used were too fragile and chipped right away. I didn't bother taking pics as we all know what chipped paint looks like.

The acrylic chrome silver and clear-red color coat paints I used are for model airplanes while the last clear coat was lacquer Eastwood Diamond Clear from a rattle can. I thought 2 solid coats of the Diamond Clear would ably protect the underlying acrylics. I thought wrong.

I'm now thinking a non-layered, single-stage paint from Krylon or Duplicolor (Oh, maybe Duracoat??? Hmmm... gotta look at what colors they have available) would be the superior alternative for this application.

The aluminum housing is back in the car until I figure it out.

I haven't done anything worthwhile to my Camaro in almost a year and a half? Shame on me... Too bad this update is a removal, not an addition!

Off comes the Vitesse Throttle Controller. It worked great for 3+ years and 4K miles (don't drive the car very often), but I think it has gone bad for whatever reason.

A couple weeks ago I was casually driving up Beach Blvd. when suddenly lost most engine power and the good ol' "Reduced Engine Power" message on the DIC.

Limped home and put on the scanner. The Torque app read a P2138 error code, something about the throttle position sensor I believe. I cleared the code and went on a 5 mile test drive. Drove fine. OK, we're good, just a glitch.

Last Thursday I started up the Camaro and made it maybe 1/4 mile from home and got the "Reduced Engine Power" message again. Oh, great... Limped home, scanned it, P2138 again.

Sunday night, after reading an extensive thread about VTCs here on Camaro6, I had a thought that the VTC might be acting up. I sent an email to Vitesse asking about the issue and promptly received a reply stating the controller may just need to be re-calibrated.

Oh, of course, I should have known that! Ok, I'll recal it next week.

Today I:
  1. Cleared the P2138 error, re-calibrated the controller, drove the car for about 1/4 mile, got the "Reduced Engine Power" (P2138) error message.
  2. Limped home, cleared the P2138 error, re-calibrated the controller, drove the car for about 1/4 mile, got the "Reduced Engine Power" (P2138) error message. I also noticed the voltmeter was showing ~12.5 volts.
  3. Unplugged the controller, cleared the error code, drove the car 5 miles with no issue. Voltmeter showed 14 volts.
  4. Replugged the controller, drove the car for about 1/4 mile, got the "Reduced Engine Power" (P2138) error message. I also noticed the voltmeter was showing ~12.5 volts.
  5. Limped home, removed the controller, cleared the error code, drove the car 5 miles with no issue. Voltmeter showed 14 volts.

Yeah, looks like something has gone awry with the controller. I emailed Vitesse with the new info, waiting for a reply.

Well, I've waited 10 months for Vitesse to reply to my emails. Maybe they forgot about me?

Today I installed a Pedal Commander throttle controller. I bought it directly from PC using their Independence Day discount. I forgot what a GIANT difference these devices make to how the car drives. Night and day difference, it's almost comical.

The PC seems to be a much more substantial device than the V (as it should seeing it is $130 more than the V). We'll see how this one goes...
