What are these tire markings called and why are they there?

Looks like an embossed Goodyear logo to me. Probably there just because they could.

I believe that mark is used to determine tire roll some manufacturers use a triangle.

This is correct.

Michelin uses the Michelin man pointing up and good year uses their logo. Its to determine the roll when using the tire for racing/performance driving. You want the tire to scrub the very very top of that. It gives you a bench mark for adjusting air pressure.

Awesome. I'll call'em roll indicators. I appreciate it.

Great info! Thanks!

May I suggest that we are talking about two different things here: a triangle on the sidewall is usually meant to indicate a location where the "wear bars" are located between the tread blocks themselves. (There are usually a few of them equally spaced around the circumference of the tire.)

Whether or not the Goodyear logo is designed for this purpose also, I do not claim to know.

Never noticed it before, but the Eagle F1 all-seasons on my LT do have an arrow in the vicinity of each wear bar. Now I don't need to find them "by braille" (running my hand through the tread groove). Thanks for the info!

This is correct. I'd assume the Goodyear logo is doing the same thing in lieu of a triangle. I don't recall seeing any triangles on the last set I was messing with, but admittedly wasn't looking for them.
