How hard would it be to replace my thermostat?
My local chevy dealership is quoting me at 1,500 dollars to do the job. The part looks like it costs less then 100 dollars online. Is this is a quick simple job I can do or would it be better for me to pay someone to do this?

What engine do you have? That might help with getting the correct answer.

YouTube is your friend…the V8 is easy, the V6 there’s more work, but still not difficult.

I believe the one in my 2016 needs to be replaced as well. What's your car doing?

My coolant temp on my dash is showing 0. It doesn't read any temperature and my air conditioner doesn't work then. Also my fan keeps running constantly under the hood. The only way to get it right is for me to unhook my battery in my trunk and hook it back up. This only lasts for about a week then I gotta unhook the battery again to restart the coolant gauge. ITS getting very annoying.

It’s probably not the thermostat, but rather the sending unit. The symptoms you describe are what it’s supposed to do if it “senses” abnormal temps. I’d start with the sensor.

it is your thermostat, can't be that hard even if it is for a v6. i have the ss, it take me a couple minutes to swap it out.

Even if the thermostat failed your dash would read the engine temperature. I would start by troubleshooting the coolant sensor, there is a chart that you can use to troubleshoot if you know how to use an ohmmeter or you could just parts bomb it. The sensor is $8. I would start with the obvious checking for damaged wires. There is also an outside sensor, is the outside temp reading correctly that has been known to cause issues. Just be aware after watching a couple videos on the sensor and thermostat the LGX is a PITA to work on.

$1500?? Seriously. Do you have more then one GM/Chevy shop around. Take it somewhere else and get another quote. They have to be trying to screw you. Also, just take it to an indy and get a quote. You don't need to take it to a Chevy shop for a thermostat.

Mine ended up being the thermostat. The dash screen would read "--" for the coolant temp. The fan would run with the car off and I would have to disconnect the battery to turn it off. My tech told me that the thermostat is a spring that gets stuck and doesn't open all the way, which is why sometimes the fan stays on and other times it doesn't. Cost me $600, parts and labor, to replace at a dealer out here in California where prices are a bit higher. $1,500 is way to much.

I'm more confused than ever now. So should I replace the sensor or the thermostat?
