How wide space before need longer studs ?

5, 8, 10,15mm ?

Not for racing, specifically for winter wheel fitment.

It depends on the thickness of the wheel's mounting surface. The rule of thumbs is to have lug nut thread engagement at least the width of the stud. So, with 14mm studs at a 1.5mm thread pitch, you want at least 9 FULL turns on the lug nut. IIRC, I was only able to run a ~3mm spacer with some aftermarket wheels and get almost 9 full turns with OEM studs.

I thought you could get away with a 5mm before you needed longer studs.

It depends on the thickness of the wheel. If the wheel is thicker than the OEM wheel then that reduces the spacer thickness. My aftermarket wheels are thicker than OEM and I used Gorilla ET lug nuts to get extra turns.

I've never even seen those. That's smart, though. That gets you another 6mm of contact length.
