Rear diff leaking

I have a 17’ 1LE 5k miles. Noticed the rear diff was glossy looking- had a coating of fluid. Upon further examination I saw the passenger side of the diff casing was also coated with fluid and there is a ring of fluid where the axle joins. Guessing maybe a bad seal. It should still be within the 5 year power train- not sure how involved of a repair this may be.

From the pics it does not look like a leak. Have the dealer workshop look at it just to be on the safe side.

What would be causing the fluid to cover the exterior casing? It looks like it dripped down- maybe a slow leak?

Your half shafts bolts are backing out and the seal is not a perfect seal, thus the small leak. Your blue paint lines on your bolts prove that, they are off counter clock wise off center. They need to be torque down to specs and possible you have the wrong shorter bolts. There is a TSB on this.

Thanks for the info. I think I saw this before but for some reason I thought I had the longer bolts.

I looked closer at the pic and there are two markings - the bolt marking does carry over to the retainer plate so it appears maybe they have not moved?

I’m going to go with they performed the TSB and someone didn’t remove the original torque stripe. They need to mark it after the TSB to show they were installed for future reference if you came in for service. It depends on the service history And if it wasn’t in for the TSB who knows why the 2 sets of marks.

Are you the original owner?

Yeah I am the original owner. I don’t think the bolts were ever changed afterwards. Maybe they corrected them from the factory- explaining two marks?

It seems possible. Like you said it’s odd the marks line up perfectly.

An older thread discussing these bolts. Nothing in here discussing torquing and backing them off.

Now I’m curious if the first mark was the 37.5 lbs and the 2nd was the additional 45°??

I check those bolts every time the car is on the lift and I don’t recall seeing two torque stripes.

okay if you say so, here is a pic of a correct blue paint torque mark.

Def need to investigate that TSP, your bolts have backed out. Does that have anything to do with a minor leak, I don't think so and actually in standard olden timey time rear diffs it was extremely common to have some oily staining or residue on the cover.

I’m with you on the two marks. I don’t see how a bolt backs out and ends up with a 2nd paint mark lining up perfectly with the backed out bolt.

Have you had the time to check the torque on those bolts?
