New Convertible Road Noise

Hello guys,

I just purchased a brand new 2022 SS convertible a couple days ago. This is my first modern convertible, but I was wondering to those who have a convertible is there a lot of road noise in yours? Because when I drive mine, the road noise is a bit loud. I knew the convertible would be louder than the coupe, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this loud. I live in Texas, so most of the roads here are concrete so they are louder than the asphalt roads, so I was wondering if this is more of a tire issue or if this is normal? I haven’t really played around with the windows because they were recently tinted. Let me know based on your experiences. Thanks

Have you had a car with run flat tires before this? They are quite a bit louder than equivalent "normal" tires and might be part of what you're hearing - has to do with the stiffer sidewall construction on the run flats.

Ii had a Gen 5 2SS and a Gen 6 2SS and the Gen 6 is MUCH quieter. You'll find the stock tires on your2SS are quiet on good/new asphalt. That narrows it down to loud roads or wind noise from a window or something. For the 'vert, id highly recommend the windscreen for when the top is down. Cuts down on wind noise and makes it easy to talk, also keeps the heat or AC in the front seat. If a call comes through with the top down, just put the windows up and you'll be able to talk. Welcome to the forum, and there is a convertible section you may want to peruse.

I actually never tried the car with the top down, I don’t mind a bit of wind noise, but I believe like you guys said it would most likely be the tires that are making most of the noise. And yes these are my first run flats.

JKSully is right on the money, when you ditch the runflats, you'll lean back and enjoy the ride. My insurance has tow coverage, that's my plan if I get a flat.

I didn’t think the runflats were that noisy…a rougher ride, of course. I guess it all comes down to what you’re used to.

I know for certain if there’s a decent amount of wind noise / turbulence, even with the top up.

I have had both and the coupe is pretty loud as well epically on certain pavement. The vert same. There is a couple of cardboard type pieces that goes on the bottom of the coupe that i put on my vert. I think it helped a lot. IMO its as quite as the coupe was. The only thing thats different is sound from behind that comes through the top say a diesel truck behind me at a relight is louder than the coupe. Search my post in the vert form for more info and I think I posted part numbers

Its not just runflats that can be noisy. I have a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my C6 Grand Sport and while they were quiet when they were new, they now are a lot louder with a bit of miles on them.

Kerry, I wasn’t able to find the parts you mentioned in the convertible forum, is there a way I can find them on the internet?
Thanks!

You will definitely get more road noise with the top down, but it's made even worse with the turbulence from the air in the cabin. A windscreen with the windows up makes a pretty significant difference to the point where you can talk to your passenger and actually hear the radio on the highway at 75.

I was thinking of getting the wind deflector for when I have the top down. Any certain one you would recommend? Because I know Chevy makes one and there are a couple aftermarket ones, but I wanted to know which one is the best from your experiences.

I must be old and going death. When I drove my new 2020 LT1 vert 450 miles home I was amazed of how quiet it was for being a convertible . But then again most of my old cars have cozy wings on them.

I have the OEM one. It folds down to fit in the trunk if you want.
