The question wasn't really whether there was a way to get wireless AA / CP in 2020 and older, it was more about whether simply putting a 2021 head unit in a 2020 car would allow the older vehicle to have wireless AA / CP.

Wireless AA is currently in the works through an add-on kit and seems to be progressing well. I don't know the status of it with CP.

The kit is out (if you're talking about the proper OE retrofit kit) and sadly no you arent going to easily put the 2021 radio into an older car. The wiring is missing, heck the entire bus is missing, the correct cluster is missing, the correct onstar module is missing etc. We did one for a company in Russia and had to custom program a few modules and they had to basically rewire the entire infotainment. I want to say around $5K job and it was still hacked together.

IMO you would be better off going with an after market head unit than trying to retro fit something

I think it is possible.
Just start to swap to infortainment 3 like i did, it is not a big deal.
https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=573804
As for me, i just waiting when first head units from 2021 will be available in junkyards to pick up one and try, 99% it is direct replacement to my current HMI.

It is not realistically possible as has already been stated in this thread. There's more to it than the head unit, which would include having to swap the WiFi radio and wiring harnesses that you really can't even fully get at.

The difference between 2020 and 2021 in only in a Headunit, which have wi fi inside. Let's wait when 2021 parts catalogue will be available to check my words.

Actually that kit is a smoking deal if you have an IOS equipped Vehicle. Retail on the module alone is $825 plus another $300+ for the map database card plus the custom programming you get to enable NAV as well as HD radio etc. They also come pre registered on the GM back end which you cant do with used modules but you dont have onstar in your market so its not as big of a deal.

I don't see why that would be a problem.

He has investment sunk into this product, he offers extra features he just listed above, plus each sale requires additional effort, too.

Considering all this, his price definitely isn't astronomical, and everyone is free to choose to take it or leave the car alone, because GM is unwilling to produce a similar upgrade path.

Thumbs up

  • OK, I received my CPLAY2air wireless CarPlay adapter.
  • I've been playing with it for about 1 week now.
  • The box and instructions looked professional.
  • Installation didn't go exactly "plug and play" or like the manual. The online firmware update was fine - no update needed. However, to get the thing to connect required trying to connect to the WiFi network of the device - it requested a password which I could not supply - but it connected after that.
  • Once connected, CPLAY2air works fine and stays connected.
  • However, my current issue is that it does not reliably auto-connect when I return to my car in the morning.
  • What I've found works is that, after it does not connect, if I unplug the CPLAY2air from the USB, then reconnect, on power up, it connects to my iPhone 12 correctly.
  • However, I am always running the next beta of iOS on my iPhone, and at least 1 time, I needed to reboot my phone to connect, I'll continue to experiment on how to reliably get an auto connect each time.
  • $130 for CPLAY2air is highly recommended - certainly over an $800 2019 head unit retrofit.
  • BTW, although the Camaro Nav app looks better - wider screen (?), sharper, more detail seemingly - the Apple Nav app works GREAT - interface simple, turning voice instructions on/off was simple, choosing an alternate root was easy, ending a route was right there, clicking between apps is simple (music, podcast, etc.). Having wireless Car Play makes this super simple to use. AND all of the Camaro apps are still there if you want to change your exhaust sound, for example.
  • Now that my iPhone 12 fits in the wireless charge pad, Car Play is my go to nav/music/podcast app.
  • I welcome any questions, comments, suggestions.

Yeah, I can follow and understand all of that, including the fact that no car manufacturer wants to give people reasons to NOT buy new vehicles.

I'd be curious to know if these replacement kits are actually different hardware than what's in the cars right now or not. Because, if they aren't, then why go through all of the trouble of plug-and-play replacement? Why not just reprogram the ones already in the car?
