Snow and Ice tire help, I know its been done, but...help a gal out
Morning,
I have searched the forum for the last month, not finding anything on the below tires...my go to in the past has been discontinued...Nitto NT90W 2019 2SS L99 NPP RS driving in Gillette Wy, with -20 ambient temperature every year and lots of sheet ice due to wind. Wind chill comes in -45 for a full month every year and 5 blizzards last year. NO she isn't my DD, but I struggle with parking her for 6 months because its just that damn cold The tires I am considering for my winter set up, or should I just put her in storage...I have never domesticated any maro I have owned (she is my 3rd) NOKIAN TIRE HAKKAPELIITTA R5 CONTINENTAL WINTER CONTACT TS 860 Which would be better and why... I live on the emergency route and my roads are well maintained. Looking at getting a winter set up. Pirelli's are not a consideration...tried them, hated them TIA... |

What I use and really really like is a performance winter tire, the Michelin PA4. Its got more snow performance than a A/S but isn't a real snow and ice tire. Plus the tire keeps the fun to drive aspect in the car. I ran that on my 1LE for 3 seasons and I'll ahve a set on my 23 ZL1.
I've had experience with the Xi3 and that was a great tire for snow and ice but I have 5-7 days of it here in Kansas City and it was way more tire than I needed. |

Check the Tire Rack website too. It has real consumer ratings of just about any tire you’d be considering.

I run a 275/35/20 and a 285/35/20 on the OE 1LE/ZL1 wheels. Last I looked at TireRack that had not replenished their inventory in all the sizes that they usually carry, I assume because it's dead middle of summer right now.

I had the Nokians on my Cruze a few years ago and they were excellent. Blizzaks are typically my go-to for snow tires but those are a great option.

The nokians and proper blizzaks are excellent tires. If you need studs, you need studs. We drive on ice and need studs in Alaska. I have a set of 255 19” studded toyos and they are good. I dont drive the car much in the winter, but a little when conditions allow. For those not familiar with high latitudes, the roads will become impacted with snow that turns to ice as more cars drive over it. It doesnt go away until late february and march, when enough sun gets back on it. We also get freezing rain several times a year. Theres always some joker that claims they run racing slicks on frozen lakes with rear wheel drive cars, but it’s impossible to just get started at some intersections and pullouts without studs here…or your that person spinning your wheels holding everyone else up. Winter tires are good for driving on snow and the sipes “help” on ice…but if you drive on ice you know there’s a pretty low limit to this.
Best idea is having a set of winter wheels with winter tires, for easy change over.

I ran the Continental tires on my wife's Regal GS. They were awesome snow tires. Made her car handle like my 4X4 RAM 1500. I never had to worry about her getting stuck or slipping/sliding. They were also quiet and rode nice. I had to replace them last year as they were 8 years old, but still had plenty of tread left on them. I think over the 8 years we put about 25K miles. Her stock rims are 19", I went down to an 18" rim for the better ride. The roads here in MI are not very good, as there are tons of pot holes.....especially in the Spring.

I run Blizzak on a separate set of wheels with TPMS. I bought a programmer so I can swap the tires myself as needed. No issues in Northern IL as my daily driver.

Ha! True, while it's still hot... it's closer than we want.
