ZLE DSSV Issues/Questions

I've searched and seen easily a handful of you have had issues with front DSSV struts clunking. I purchased a used ZLE with 9,000 miles and now at 11,000 it developed clunking from both sides. I've had it up in the air and checked end links, steering arm and all control arm bolts. I plan to purchase two front struts since it's out of warranty but I was curious if anyone has actually taken one apart that was clunking and actually found the issue. Do they physically break internally or does the nut on the bottom simply back off and fall into the insert? Figured I'd ask before I spend the money if it's something I can take apart and repair. Thank you in advance!

I had 2 front DSSV struts replaced under warranty.

These inverted type struts have a nut holding assembly in place and that nuts one some early samples was not properly loctited and comes loose.

Easy to duplicate - grab wheel and pull / push aggressively.

Drivers front failed. Passenger rear failed. Also had a defective front caliper. All replaced under warranty. Car sees heavy track time.

Your short video actually helped me a lot. I'm assuming since yours were covered under warranty you were not able to inspect?

I've also seen this image posted by Snakebt6 in another thread. Just wondering why it couldn't be tightened back up as it looks like it just came loose from the insert. As I said, my plan is to order new and tear mine down and diagnose. I'll be sure to post pics.

Yeah, I asked to see failed part, but it had been returned/disposed by time I picked up the car. No idea what actual disposal procedure is on $2400 list price part.

What happened with the rear? Just blew out and leaked fluid everywhere or did it break?

Yeah, blew out and fluid all over the place. Was lucky to find it when I was inspecting my tires between sessions. Luckily none made it to the tire surface during that session.

Are the replacement struts an improvement or the original design?

15,000+ miles later, issue did not resurface.

I did see that they changed the part numbers twice, not that it means much with GM. Ordered the struts yesterday. Also, everything I've read ACDelco puts a limited lifetime warranty on these when purchased aftermarket.
