so on a different thread I saw the manual advises taking them off for track events. but doesn't that contradict the idea they are there for high speed aerodynamics? I've done two track events, small time attack things, and left them on. Has anyone else taken them off for track, and if so then what's the point of having them at all?

Yes.

There is the front tire deflector. And then the control arm brake deflector.

The tire deflector will likely block airflow from hitting the taller control arm deflector, so they advise it gets removed.

However, they do provide aerodynamic benefits in terms of drag and turbulence for the benefit of fuel economy. Which is why they are used for street use.

"And rather than a traditional front air dam to reduce aerodynamic lift, the team developed a flush belly pan that stretches from the front grille to the center of the vehicle. Paired with small “spats” forward of the front tires, the smooth underbody helps reduce total lift by 30 percent – while also reducing aerodynamic drag."

If you lived closer, I'd offer mine that I took off, but it's a $20 per piece item, you'll probably be better off getting new ones online.

I replaced both of mine when I installed my splitter. They were in bad shape and for $22 a piece why not?

I replaced one a while back, hit a possum. It was less than $30 at dealership.I though the 1le didn't have these because of their front splitter.

These air deflectors are there to reduce overall drag. The drag is induced by air interacting with rotating tire tread and causing all kinds of asymmetrical vortices which disrupt air flow, mainly under the car in this case.

These are found on many street cars for this exact purpose. Reduced drag leads to increased fuel economy. The impact of the deflectors will be relative to the overall drag coefficient of the body shape of the car. So the engineer saying the impact for a camaro is negligible below 125 mph may be spot on. The flip side of this is GM may have needed them to hit their fuel economy target for the CAFE standard. Fractional percentage gains count there.
