General G-Max RS first impression

Was in need of some new meats this year. The tires on the car when the dealership sold it to me were already getting hard and loud. I bounced back and forth between the continental extreme contacts DWS 06 plus and the generals. After finding out General tires parent company was continental I decided so save a few bucks since I don't run the car all season.

Tread was nice and soft. These tires were relatively lighter like the continental's in comparison to BF Goodrich's comp 2. Having less rotational weight was a plus.

Temperature was around 25-30 degrees on Saturday when I had them put on. Overall noise level was fantastic. Very quiet ride, very smooth, and even impressive straight line grip despite the lower temperatures.

Managed to hit up a few back roads over the weekend and they do seem to have a good amount of turn in bite once warm.

All in all I'm happy this far. We look to have some rain possibly coming in later this week, hoping to have some wet weather trips in to report back as well as some warmer temps soon!

Final total shipped to my door was $834.07 for the OEM 20 245/275 combo. Very happy thus far.

3/7/22 update

Had some substantial rain this morning. Tires held their own at 50-60mph. Deeper puddles do create a bit of pulling but nothing drastic.

I ended up putting those on my 91 1LE’s factory wheels as there’s not a lot available anymore in a 16”. They are great for what they are and held their own during an event a few years ago.

Unfortunately, I can’t say the same thing about the G-Max AS05. Granted, they’re an all-season - albeit in the “ultra high performance” class, but I picked them up for my dd Regal GS AWD and they suck when pushed in any conditions. I mention this just to note that not all General G-Max tires are worth running.

I liked my OE SS ZR1 (true 17x9; Camaro-specific fitment 96-99 SS and GMPP F-1) and Falken RT615k for the track. Perfectly suited for the weight and power level of the car (LB9). Regret selling this one but I didn’t have the room :(

Not too bad. Nice street tire for summer. Not as aggressive as some of the other patterns.

My first choice was BFG sport comp 2 but their tires were substantially heavier than these or continentals. When I bought the car it came with BFGs and once I swapped to the generals I could tell there was a reduction in weight.

I just had a set of G Max AS05's put on my RS 2 days ago, and am thrilled with them. They balanced easily with little weight, are remarkably quiet, at least for now, and feel planted. It was raining hard the day they were installed, and they felt confident. Yesterday was warm and sunny, and they were a pleasure to drive on. Very responsive as well.

I'm glad to read this post because I've spent the last couple days researching this exact General tire and I don't know anybody who's ever bought General tires. Can I ask why you went 245s up front instead of 275s? I was thinking about going 275s all around but if there's something I'm not thinking about I'd love to hear your opinion on it. As far as I can tell the General GMAX RS is not only a really highly rated tire but the price is right. The last set of summer tires I bought, in the summer of 2016, were the Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500s. 245/45/20. I didn't have a ton of money to spend and they had decent reviews but I wasn't too impressed with them. Over the last 7 summers I'd say my opinion of them has went up but not by much. I should've just gotten what I wanted and put the extra few hundred bucks on a credit card.

I just decided to run stock tire sizes. I don't track the car so wider fronts only add weight in my scenario. I'm also lowered so I wasn't 100% sure if 275s in the front would rub on a stock offset.

I honestly love the tires. Very quiet and very grippy now that warm weather has hit. The only tore I may trade out for is the continental extreme contact DWS06s

I put those tire on my '13 about a year ago. Decent tire and they handle wet AND snow quite well.

DavidH,
I have those same tires ,same size on my 2010,I love them they are fairly soft and get pretty tacky after a burnout. They will put on quite a smoke show too.

I just replaced these tires with these tires. Great price to performance ratio with good tread life
