Opinion on these ZL1 mods?
I'm looking at buying a 2018 ZL1 with some bolt-ons. I'm buying from a dealership, but I have contact with the previous owner as well. I plan on contacting him once more with a few more questions about the car.
What questions would you all ask before buying? Build List I have: 2" Headers Rotofab Big Gulp Intake Flex fuel Bluetooth ethanol gauge PPF on the front bumper I've been told 680rwhp and 720 crank hp. |

I’m no mod expert but I would ask who did the work and tune.
Is there any available paperwork he could provide like dyno printout, parts list, window sticker etc. Why did he sell? You gonna be able to handle the power? Good luck! |

The most important question is whether or not the oil pump has been replaced, preferably with a Katech unit. See this thread for reference (and check the poll results, too): https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=532479. Many other similar threads in the ZL1 discussion subforum.
Make sure you get a full service history and see if fluid changes were done correctly and timely. Other than that, this will definitely be an awesome car, very sturdy and powerful. 680 rwhp is a little generous for these mods and certainly doesn't correspond to 720 crank hp, but I wouldn't give a crap about these dyno numbers that aren't comparable anyway, drivability, capability and your sensation of power is what really matters.

1) Who did the tune 2) dyno available 3) who installed the mods 4) documentation of all mod work 3) general service records available (oil changes, diff fluid changes, etc) 4) stock oil pump or replacement. FWIW, the Big Gulp is overkill for those mods unless more mods were planned.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Yes he is the original owner. The Carfax shows regular maintenance being done on the car. He's an older guy with a wrap shop and has a ton of cars. Apparently, his wife made him sell it because he has too many toys lol. I will ask him for the shop's name and may reach out to the shop just to see more detailed mod work. If everything checks out, I'll definitely be getting it soon! I don't think the oil pump has been replaced, but I've thoroughly researched the pre-failure signs and I have about $5k set to the side in a high APY savings account for the worst case scenario. The car is such a good deal (at least in this market), that if the oil pump stays strong for a year, I may change it out anyways and possibly do light mods. Sidenote: If I can't handle the power now, I will definitely learn lol! I respect the ZL1's power and I'll baby the pedal until I get used to it. |

Has anyone reported the failure of KaTech's pump?

Not one that I recall. Katech_Zach posted that they had performed countless hours of load testing internally, with no failure.
He also said all GM LT4 oil pumps from every model year failed during their testing, the only difference among them was the breaking point that slightly improved with the small revisions GM made to the pump. This is why I recommended Katech's unit to OP.
