I just did it this way earlier this week to add longer wheel studs.

-Engage the parking brake
-Jack up car, remove tire assembly
-Remove the large axle nut (36mm socket)
-Disengage the parking brake
-Remove the caliper, rotor and ABS wheel speed sensor
-Push axle stud in. As mentioned, it may take a hit with a heavy hammer to break free but you shouldn't have to smack to hell out of it. Use a piece of wood to protect the end of the stub.
-Once free, the axle will give a small amount. You can push it in maybe 3/4". -This will give access to the bearing hub bolts. Having someone else push in on the axle while you loosen the hub bolts helps.

-Make sure the splines, bolt and axle threads, and all mating surfaces are clean and rust free when assembling. Lightly coat the axle splines with grease. The service manual states to replace the blue washer and nut, part #s in next post.

As mentioned above, high strength, high temperature threadlocker is to be used on the wheel bearing hub bolts, GM # 89021297/Permatex #27200

The fastener torque #s are:

ABS sensor: 89 lbs/in
Axle nut: 185 lbs/ft (Edit: I originally had 195 lbs/ft. Service manual says 185.)
