My dealership offered life-of-the car free oil changes, etc. It went in one ear and out the other. I do my own oil changes. I've been doing my oil changes on several of my cars for years. I changed over to 0w40 oil as soon as it was readily available. So far, the performance is better than 5w30. I also replaced the oil filler cap.

I will use 5W30 in my 2017 ZL1 because that is what the owners manual states to use. I don’t understand the fuss over using this new oil. It’s not rocket science just use what GM says to use and it’s good to go! As long as 5W30 oil is around that’s what I will use.

Is that better than 5w30?

It looks like it’s between the 2 listed....

What do you think?
The initial fill and recommended oil for the 17's was 5w30 Dexos 1 (green stamp). I've seen the 0w30 at Walmart and unless yours has something different than mine, that is also Dexos 1 (green stamp). I've yet to see Mobil 1 at Walmart that is Dexos 2 (blue stamp). I have seen a Valvoline with the blue Dexos 2 stamp, but not 0w40.

For those of us tracking our cars, 5W30 doesn't cut it...especially in the hotter months. The big deal with this new oil recommendation is that instead of GM saying you need to run different oils for the street and track you can now just leave it in and be good for both. Some dealers are being pricks about switching over for 17/18 models, but the good dealerships have no qualms switching out your cap and putting the new oil in while maintaining warranty.

It also says to use DEXRON®-HP Automatic Transmission Fluid in the A8 transmission in the 2017 manual which is no longer recommended by GM. Mobil 1™ Synthetic LV ATF HP is now the recommended fluid. Some even have proposed that the original fluid may be part of the reason of the A8 "shudder" that has plagued many owners.

Times change and GM's recommendations have changed to help their products run better, last longer, be more friendly to the environment, etc.

Something you should consider...

True except for the ZL1 1LE. GM recommends that the Mobil 1 ESP 0-40 be switched to Mobil 1 15W-50 for track use and switching back to Mobil1 ESP 0W-40 for street use.

Yes I was just saying for me I will use 5W30 because I don’t track or race my 2017. I read about the recommendations that GM says to use for track events or competitions and would go that route but I just drive mine on the street and see no need to go to the newer oil.

I have noticed that the minimal oil consumption I was seeing with M1 5w30 has disappeared when I use M1 ESP 0w40 or Valvoline Dexos MST 5w40. I wont be going back to 5w30, I like the added weight in this high HP motor, especially here in LA where it never gets very cold

Hi all,

I just switched to the 0W40 Mobil 1 ESP in my '18 ZLE. I don't track the car, but I live in the hot desert, so I felt the higher viscosity would be better, even for the street. I'm still using the PF64 oil filter and have never had any issues with that.

I noticed as soon as the 0W40 was in the motor the normal street driving oil pressure was up a bit. With the 5W30 I had always used before, my oil pressure would run at about 38 psi. It now seems to be running at about 42-43 psi in the same around town driving. The idle psi is about the same as before.

Like many others here I am concerned about the possibility of oil pump failure. I'm hoping the 0W40, along with frequent oil changes, will help keep the system alive. As to the 18 MY vs.19 MY recommended oil, I do not think there are any substantial internal motor changes that would prohibit the use of the 0W40 in an '18 MY ZLE.

I’m happy to say that I just had my 500 mile oil change done and the dealer used ESP. I don’t trust anyone so I checked the part # on the work order.
