Question Rear Bumper Reflector Lens Replacement Help

Hi all. I have a single exhaust tip rear bumper for the 6.2 dual exhaust. I want to replace the reflectors that are in the lower diffuser, but it doesn't seem to have an easy way to access them from the bottom 😐😐

Can anyone confirm how these things come out? I was considering using a plastic tool from the face of the reflector... hoping someone can assist on this.

Thanks

They are each held in place by a single Philips screw from the backside, you'll see where if you crawl under the car and check above the big aluminum impact bar. Once this screw is undone, they will easily push out from the rear.

This, they are a pain to get out and replace, but you can certainly do it without removing the bumper, I changed them on my Quad Exhaust SS...

It took me about a half hour with quite a bit of swearing, but I got them in .. You definitely need to lay on your back and reach over the exhaust outlets...

Can confirm, not very satisfying . Its really a pita. Specially when you don't have the right length of a screw driver

That was my problem, too, I should really go and get some very long screwdrivers (if only for headlight adjustments)... That said, I heard access got a bit better on 2019+ cars after the rear bumper change, on our pre-refresh cars there is only a really thin sliver of space to get through to these reflectors.

Didn't help I lost the screw to the one... honestly. That was entirely too much work for a reflector. I'm doing the footwell lights next, I'm sure ima hate that even more

I did them on my 2020. It was tight but very doable. I don't remember which screw driver I ended up using, but I think it was a short one. About 10 minutes of the 30 was spent looking for one of the screws. I thought it had dropped down into the bumper, but when I found it, it had fallen out and rolled about 5 feet away. I didn't really have to have it, since the Wildhammer kit comes with the screws, but I didn't want it rolling around inside the body.

I did it, and not gonna lie, you'll curse everyone at gm who had a hand in the way the footwell lighting is to be installed. The end result will be worth it, though.

i would highly recommend running the screws in and out a couple of times in the new reflectors to cut some threads in them. it will make your life happier...

OK I just changed these out myself and what I did was I took a DREMEL tool and cut away a small portion of the black plastic material by the aluminum crash bar to give me easier access to the screw that retains these damn reflectors on. Then I used a small phillips screw driver to remove the screw. A magnetic telescopic fishing tool is helpful to retrieve the screw if you drop it after it comes loose from the reflector.

It is also helpful to jack the back of the car up as high as you can, THEN use jack stands to support it so that you can get better line of sight access to the screw that is holding the reflector on. It is best of course if you could get the the car up on a lift but very few of us have that at our house (LOL).

On a SIDE NOTE, I also changed out the third brake light with a smoked lens unit. EVERYONE will tell you that you have to take off the inner truck panel to get access but that is BS. Just use painters tape and carefully tape around the third light and use a plastic trim tool and pry out the light from the OUTSIDE of the trunk. That light is held on by adhesive seal and some spring style clips that will ALL release once you get the light to break that adhesive seal. When the light comes out there will be a small wire connector that is attached to the back center of the light so just carefully remove that .

I took GOO-GONE to thoroughly clean the area where the old seal was because most of it will still be there once you remove the light and you want of course a clean surface for the new seal to adhere to.

See pic below for the trim tool I used along with the painters tape (for third light install) and magnetic fishing tool (reflector install).

I found this video to explain and show it most clearly. I actually didn't find the job too difficult, but you have to do it blind and by feel. No sense trying to look in there, especially if you're on ramps or jack stands.

If you don't have a little magnetizer / demagnetizer, they're great to have on hand and for a project like this.

Or a simple telescoping magnet works too.
