Front Camera Using Camera Fin

I know A-A-Ron here has done this but anyone use the camera fin and rear view mirror from a 2020+ as their front camera?

I have a 2018 ZLE and was tossing the idea around of using a 2020+ antenna camera and rear view mirror. I would take the camera out of the fin of course and put it into a different housing mount and since its already wired to the rear view mirror, I'd just run the wires and replace my current rear view mirror with it. I know gen5diy has a $800-$1300 front camera kit but not only is that pricey i dont want to have to send them my head unit. Besides the cost, their install seems more complicated than my idea.

Obviously I would have to do more research so any thoughts and experiences are definitely welcomed.
Thanks in advance.

I am very curious if the 2019+ cars can get the HMI reprogrammed to accept an additional camera. A front camera is something I would have paid big money to have on the car.

Sounds like a good project for White Automotive and Media. Maybe I will send them a message.

I would check to see if the antenna camera has the fish eye effect or not.

gen5diy already has what you're mentioning but it costs $1300 if you are purchasing their HMI or $800 if you are sending in your own to get reprogrammed. They basically jail broke the HMI to accept another camera. I really like their kit but way too costly for me right now. I'm just looking for the least expensive way to do the front camera. Amazon has a wireless bumper camera with LCD for about $120 that I'm thinking about going with. Otherwise I would like to find a 2019+ oem mirror and fin/spoiler camera off a salvaged camaro and do it that way.

This guy did it for about $10 but put in a lot of work.

I'd gladly pay money for the option if Gen5DIY had it, but that kit is not for the 2019+ like I mentioned in my post.

My bad. I misread.

But isn't his exactly what A-A-Ron did?
He disconnected the Camera in his Rear Spoiler and did put a Camera in the front and connect it to the rear view mirror.
If you would like to keep the rear camera in the Shark fin ( if you have it) then you would need a splitter.

Someone said around here that even with a splitter the image would be mirrored incorrectly, not sure if that's still an issue or if you'd care about the image mirror

Right but he also did a whole bunch of modifications to the camera set up and wiring. In my case i would only use the fin camera (re-house it of course) and rear view video mirror for the front. Id not need it for the rear. What i dont know is if i can just plug and play by taking a 2019 rear view camera mirror, its wire harness that connects to the fin camera, and the fin camera itself. Then mount the camera somewhere in the front and just run the wire harness directly to the 2019+ rear view mirror. This way when i need to see the front i can just flip the switch on the rear view mirror. In my head it seems to work but not sure if it will. Make sense? LOL

Yes it will work. But you would need the Power harness as well, if you do not have already a live Mirror.

If you do not have the Live View Mirror and the camera in the back, you would need these parts:

- Live View Mirror, GM Part #: 84566425
- Live View Mirror - Back-Cover, GM Part #: 84348115
- Gen5diy Harness - Klick on me (if you have the auto-dimmed Mirror currently you need part # 220600, if you have the manual dimming mirror then 220605 Klick on me
- 6m Fakra RG174 Cable: Klick on me
- GM OEM Camera (all others will not work) Camera only instead buying the Shark Fin: Klick on me
- Grommet (if needed): Klick on me

The installation is very easy...
take look at this video: Klick on me

I did the install on my Convertible last week (unfortunately I had to buy a 2019 Spoiler with the camera integrated and got it painted). So all the same, only the the camera location is different.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to find a salvaged 20+ and just buy the fin camera, wire harness from camera to mirror and the mirror itself. I know gen5diy has a kit but it's pretty pricey. Thanks again for the other info too.

yes.. if you are able to find salvaged parts, then you only need the Harness from Gen5diy for $99.

Picking up this thread again.

Just saw that the newer Chevy Silverados do have a front cam with FAKRA connectors as the Live Mirror rear cam from the Camaros.

As these from the Silverados ar Front cams i guess the Picture would be correct. But I do only not know, if the Camera would work with the mirror.

found this one for example:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/23488807091...Cclp%3A2047675

If i would live in the US i would give it a try.. but just for buy and try to get it shipped to Europe it would cost me to much.

Maye someone willing to test? ;-)
