Difference in LT1s?

My curiosity spiked me when reading about the LS1 Vs LT1 Engine discussion. Not just about that but what are the improvements from the late 90s LT1 vs Current LT1? Other than the displacement size & power?

I tried to search it online but I cant seem to string the words correctly to find anything. Not sure how to word it so Google will bring me what I want to see.

Thanks in advance!

Late 90’s LT1 was iron block, reverse flow cooling, and regular port injection. Spark was handled by the “Opti-spark” which was driven off the front of the motor (and right behind the water pump...lol) and fed all 8 cylinders. Very short runner intake manifold made of aluminum gave much better HP numbers than the L98 engine it replaced (but less mid-range torque). Throttle body was dual 48mm blades if memory serves.

So, the bore spacing is probably the only thing that is the same.

Nothing is the same to my knowledge. The 90's LT1 was a decent engine but has nowhere near the potential of the LS or modern LT1. There are some significant design hertles that are expensive to overcome in order to make big HP, couple that with the short production run and limited aftermarket support

I still own a 97 Trans Am with a 355ci LT1 with a T-56 and 9 inch rear with 4.30 gears. The heads and intake manifold are stock castings that have been CNC ported. Car makes 438 at the wheels and I still like driving it, its totally different animal than the 6th gen

There has actually been 3 generations of the LT1 engine.

The 1970 LT-1 5.7/350 CID that was one of the better HP engines for the Camaro for those years. This was back when GM still offered a different corporate engine for each brand.

Then the 1992-1996 LT1 5.7/350 CID that was used in the 4th gen F-Body cars. While it was a good upgrade from the L98 TPI engine as it had more power and a better RPM range due to the shorter runner setup, it was a failure because of the optispark system that had engine coolant flowing thru it. Those optispark's died all the time.

Then there is the new LT1 we have now, 6.2/376 CID and a clean sheet design. Only 2 parts carried over from the LS series engine into the LT series engine and those 2 parts are nothing major, I think it was a bolt and a bearing for the crank.
