Couple of Questions for a New Owner

Evening Everyone,

Just purchased a ZL-1 and got a couple of questions.

I know with a Z06/Z51 there is a break-in oil change at 500 miles. In a thread a found on this forum, there was a back and forth on the 500 mile oil change.

1. Is there a 500 mile oil change recommendation from GM, because of salesperson did say anything to me, or is it a user recommendation on the forum?

2. Can I get any recommendations on which SD card to purchase for the PDR?

Thanks in advance of any advise/recommendations/suggestions.

Safe Driving,
Tony

Yeah Tony...when the 17 was announced GM didn't have the 500mi change on the radar, but eventually pinged it.

Tell your dealer you want the 0-40 Mobile.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes been waiting for the 0/40 to become available in the retail market. Was tied of bouncing from 5/30 to 15/50 when I went to the track. Thanks for the information.

I took in the oil bulletin & my dealer ordered the 0/40...I don't think you guys with the most recent 19 cars will have resistance. Most all the growing pains should be worked through.

You can use any size just as long as it's formatted to FAT32. You can download a free program to do so off of the internet. It's called EaseUS Partition Manager.

I currently have a 128GB microSD in my car. SanDisk or Samsung are good but they're all ok for the PDR. You can get a microSD, just make sure you have an adapter.

Something like this is good but anything like it will work:

SD cards go on sale fairly often. I check slickdeals.net for anything I'm trying to get for a good price.

In regards to the oil change I would changing the filter at a couple hundred miles and recommend changing the oil no later than 500 miles even if GM says it can wait.

My reasoning is on new engines there will be aluminum casting flash that will loosen and find it's way into the oil along with assembly lube, small pieces of RTV ect. Most say that the filter will take care of this and they are correct, it should. For my 17' ZL1, 18' Silverado and my wife's 18' Acadia I changed the oil at or before 500 miles and when inspecting the filter I was surprised how much debris was in the filter of all 3 vehicles. While this debris wasn't causing any damage I want it out of the engine's oil system. Filters are cheap and are so easy to change on the ZL1. For me it's a piece of mind (and I'm very anal about this type of thing) as I don't want to risk damaging this engine. From my experience by the 3rd oil change, at about 1200 miles, the oil and filter looked very clean and from that point forward I change the oil per GM's recommendation.

Another break in lubricant you want to change sooner than later is the rear differential, I would change it no later than 500 miles. This is inexpensive and very simple to do. After a few track days I changed mine for the second at 1500 miles and it still looked way cleaner than the 500 mile oil did.

Like some, I did my initial oil change at just over 500 miles.

I did the second oil change and my first diff fluid change at 1500 miles.

My third oil change was at 6000 miles and I plan to do every 5k from here on out.

Had a few flame me about how modern oils don't need the old school oil change frequency. But whatever. You care for your car the way you want. Better safe than sorry.

At 11k, I plan to do another oil change, another diff fluid change and to swap out the trans fluid in my 6M for Royal Purple Synchromax.

Would also recommend changing the diff fluid at around 1500-2000 miles as well. I did a couple of track days before 2000 miles, changes my diff fluid after and the magnetic plug was caked with particles. It's an easy change. Probably 30 minutes if you have ramps and the oil is only like $25 if I remember correctly.
