Zl1 diff VS SS diff

I have searched and searched and can’t find a definite answer.

Are the SS and ZL1 diff the same unit?

If not what’s the difference?

How do they compare to a 5th gen ZL1 diff?

Not sure about the regular SS, but the SS 1LE and the ZL1 use the same e-diff.

SS (non-1LE) and ZL1 Verts use G80 - DIFFERENTIAL, LOCKING REAR FULLY AUTOMATIC limited slip.

SS 1LE and ZL1 coupes use G96 - DIFFERENTIAL, ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP

Do you know any specs on either one? Ring & pinion sizes the same?

Ring gear sizes are hard to find. It looks like 1LE/ZL1 e-LSDs are 226mm I believe (8.9"). I haven't found replacement ring gears so far.

From the Chevy press site: https://media.chevrolet.com/media/us...2019.tab1.html
G96 ELSD (ZL1 non 1LE)
3.73 (manual)
2.85 (automatic)

G80 ZL1 vert and SS
3.73 (manual)
2.77 (automatic)

Saw a GM Authority publication that ZL1-1LE ratio was 3.93 on the manual ... but I couldn't confirm that on the Chevy press release site.

I also read somewhere (probably on these forums) that the ring gears are welded in the G96, and possibly also G80 but not sure. So the only way to upgrade may be to build/buy a completely new rear end.

There's another thread on here about differential information and it's not certain.

I believe someone quoted an unnamed GM-Engineer as saying the diff's are closer to about 9.25"-ish, but definitely smaller than the 9.9" of the 5th Gen ZL1 (Gravedigger, lol). The source I got my dimensions from were from an on-line dealer parts list. So don't take my numbers as the end-all-be-all, but that's what GM's listing in parts catalogs.

I woulda' thought it would be at least 9-inches just for strength. I guess there aren't too many failures reported so far, so it must be a good design.
