Good to know, sounds like I'm a green light to throw one on and enjoy some additional blower noise.

Having read several threads in these forums and considering that I am not planning to tune the car, I will add the drop-in K&N filter (# 33-5047).

To save some money on the panel filter, Summit Racing has their house brand filter that is cheaper than the K&N. Same look and cleans like the K&N too.

Thanks for the info Greg. Is that the one for the ZL1?

EDIT: Actually the Summit Racing filter panel is more expensive than the K&N one because of shipping and import taxes. I can find the K&N locally. Thanks anyway mate.

Isn't the green filter supposed to offer better performance than a K&N?

I just watched two separate dyno tests of a K&N drop in panel filter for a Camaro SS - the first one gained 5 peak rwhp, and the 2nd gained 9 peak rwhp. These were back to back runs on the same car, like minutes later.

As I said earlier, I'm willing to bet some of the gains over this that a CAI shows on a dyno is due to the hood being opened.

~5 rwhp for $70 is a pretty decent bang for the buck, and it has no effect on warranty.

I think a ZL1 would see even more of an increase due to a lot more airflow than an SS, but I couldn't find a dyno test to prove it.

Yes it does look good and if it had been available when I bought my Roto-Fab I would have considered the AFE CAI.

I hate to be a Negative Nancy or Debbie Downer on this thread, but K&N filters are absolute garbage.

Here is a link to a scientific ISO 5011 air filter test, wherein they tested 9 filters, from paper filters to K&N, to UNI, which I think is a foam filter.

These tests were performed on an expensive test unit that had standardized dust grains, with standard fixtures for holding the filters, and accurate measurement gauges.

The K&N not only passed the most dust, but it clogged earlier than all the others.

I used to drink the K&N Koolade, but not any more. Actual air filtration is what's important to me, and a little more blower whine is not worth massive dust ingestion into my engine. Stock filters are best - for filtration.

I tried the K&N drop-in air filter on my SS and frankly it was not worth squat on the dragstrip. This was going from low-miles stock air filter to the K&N. I had read one of those claims back in the day, and the truth that I found was that the K&N was worthless for performance on my SS. Subject is ZL1, but you are citing some data for an SS, so I have to mention this.

Again, I am talking about my SS not gaining any performance, have not tried it with a ZL1.

Anybody have a PN for the pre-filter if they run one on a Roto-Fab Big Gulp?

I agree. I was in a muffler shop over 25 years ago and they had a K&N display where there was air blowing through a paper filter similar to a factory filter and through a K&N filter. The air was sending ping pong balls up clear tubes. The K&N filter was obviously lifting the ball quite a bit higher than the OEM type filter. I removed the K&N filter from the display and held it up to the light. You could easily see light coming through holes in the gauze even with the oiled media. It's obvious they can't filter like a paper filter, so silica would get into your engine & oil accelerating wear.

I'm running a Green filter - little question an oiled element don't filter quite as well as a thick paper element but "accelerated wear" is also mythology with no science behind it.

I've heard people claim actual sand gets through the filter - ok, maybe if you drive in a desert and/or live/drive in a very dusty area. I've removed my filter multiple time to inspect and the intake is spotlessly clean.

There is hype on both sides of this debate. Three sides to every story. I believe most of the power gains (call it 3-5 hp depending on conditions) is largely in the element itself. The restriction is not in housing unless you're pushing ~700+ rwhp
