My '17SS has had an issue with 1st-2nd shifts since new. No grinding, but hard to shift unless I shift at 3500-4000 rpm. I switched fluid to Royal Purple but did not help the issue. A friend who is a Corvette/Camaro tech says the issue is most likely the type of synchro on 2nd gear.

I notice this when the car is still cold...I double clutch it in the morning or when first starting up and it slides nice...after a few miles and its warmed up it its fine.

2016 SS M6, 35k miles.
Same issue since I got it at 24k miles. I went to Royal Purple Synchromesh quite recently around 34k miles and it went away for a day or two. After that, right back to the same occasional weird shift into 2nd. From my findings this is a hit or miss trait of the Tremecs. The Purple stuff did help a little bit with shift smoothness, but not much. Just know that it'll [probably] never blow up. People run stock TR6060s at 900whp with some beast clutch in front of it and they're fine for years of abuse. I'm not concerned banging a gear or two at redline on stock power levels. I understand yours is a 3160, not a 6060, but I wouldn't be worried about it. Just chalk it up to the Tremec. Your axle(s) will come apart before you lose a gear in a 6060. |

ok so i went to the dealer just to test drive a new camaro with the same m6 transmission, turned out that the slightly newer one did not shift as smooth as mine and yet i was complaining.

One thing to understand is that as the torque capacity of the transmission increases generally the shift effort increases as well. You are simply manipulating larger parts and the synchros are trying to accelerate more mass (this leads to the increased shift time). This is the main reason why high torque capacity, high RPM transmissions that need to shift fast get rid of synchros in their design.

I have owned a LOT of manual transmission cars including 6 with tremecs, bunch of BMW's one 911, an Evo, a miata. The best shifting cars were the Miata, Evo and BMW M3. All of the V8 cars including BMW that uses Getrag and C4's that use ZF plus all the tremecs are slower shifting, less smooth - more finicky. That said - I am pretty used to driving them by now and must say I almost never get the crunch - driving technique is key.

FYI- that’s only in the 8-cylinder models.
