Police Officers Question

Be great if some officers/state troopers/ etc could answer this. But I normally drive 10-15 over. I try to stay around 10 and I was wondering what do most of y'all allow over the speed limit and what mainly you pull people over for and why? Just a thread to help me learn what to do, not too, etc. I met a cop who followed me where I was going, just after I had punched my car from 10-97 getting on the highway running through my town with a speed limit
Of 45. He pulled up beside me after I had gotten to the restraint to meet my
Friends and talked to me about my car, told me he saw what I did. He too was a camaro owner of a 2010 1SS and said he knew it was fun. But be careful and look out. Have any of y'all done that to someone?

I would recommend not going over 5-7mph over the posted speed limit. Then you shouldn't have to worry about it. going that extra 3-10mph isn't going to get you there much faster...

Yeah, I usually stay in the 5-7mph over depending on the situation. You really don't have to worry much about getting pulled over going 5 over... unless the cop is having a bad day. I take the same route to work and when I pass a cop, I'll usually look over to see his expression. At 5 over, they usually don't even like at the speed. At 7 over, they'll usually check my speed but decide not to go after me. Going over 8 over is pretty risky. How fast other traffic is going is important too. I've only been pulled over once (doing 86 in a 70) and the cop said I was going faster than traffic which made him decided to pull me over. However, the rest of the traffic was going about 80 in a 70 so it really depends on the situation. Going 10 over in a 30 is a much bigger deal than 10 over in a 70.

I follow a 10% rule. If the speed limit is 50, I cruise at 55, 60, cruise at 66, etc. Since the fastest speed around here is 70mph on the expressway, the most I typically ever do is 77mph. There are exceptions. If I'm driving with a group of cars all doing 8 or 9 over, I'll cruise with them.

And I use cruise control ALL the time.

Officially, 1 mph over the limit is speeding.
Unofficially my professional tolerance is 15 mph over the limit, but not always. School zones and weather are trump cards.
25 mph in a 65 mph zone is too fast if the roadway is ice or fog.
Apologize with an explanation might get you a warning.
Deny and being a smart azz will always get you stubbed up.

I try to use the 80% rule, if 80% of the cars are going as fast as you are then you should be ok. If I feel like everyone is going faster than me I speed up until I am keeping pace with 80% of the cars.
If there is no traffic I try to keep it around the speed limit to no more than between 5 and 10 over depending on conditions.
In construction zones and school zones and residential areas I go the posted speed for the zone even when most others never slow down.
Using this method I have not received a speeding ticket since 1977.

I usually give 10 mph on highways. But School zones, construction zones, and areas with high pedestrian traffic I don't give as much.

Exactly, it will vary from state to state, county to county.....hell, from cop to cop. Here in Indy, its mostly 12 over. A lot of times the court wont even file if its 1-5 over. Bottom line, you do what you think you are big enough to get away with.

I normally wait until 15 over as well. I haven't written many speeding tickets, just a good reason to see if I can find something better than a simple traffic offense.
Then again if you're weaving in and out of cars I don't care how over you're going that drives me nuts and it's not safe.

I've pulled people over for going too slow as well though. If they are in the left lane and going under the speed limit and don't move over... Yea I'm looking into it. Plus it's illegal here to ride in the "passing lane" and not getting over.

Oh and also depends on the cops job... Traffic cops have to write tickets it's their job. They are normally more strict.

School zones, Construction zones, Hospitals and by the police station are the places you need to slow down at. There are others but use your common sense and don't drive like an ahole. Anywhere else I wouldn't look at you for less than 13 over. If your doing over that you may get my attention. Twenty over- your certainly getting a ticket.
My own pet-peeves are:
If your a cop and you write tickets outside the above exceptions for less than ten over, you're a dink!
Stay outta the left lane, except to pass. Thats the Troopers Lane
Move over and slow dafuq down around emergency vehicles
Use your damn directionals. They are there for a reason!
Don't stop in the high speed lane of the highway for any reason.
