Rustproofing for daily driver/winter driver in northern US

I searched the forum, but the rustproofing threads I found were not US based.

In northern IL we have a decent amount of salt on our roads. I'll be using the SS as a daily driver, but will have other vehicles to drive when the snow is deep. I'll have a dedicated winter tire/wheel package.

We have our other sedans "fogged" to control corrosion on the interior cavities where they aren't fully painted. Is this car setup with ports for fogging? I've looked into the doors and other areas after having this done and the coating inside was continuous.

I know this isn't a popular car to drive in the winter, but I will, so any successful undercoating or rustproofing measures that you have done would be nice to know. If the factory protection is good, then great. If it's anything like their truck beds, then something needs to be done. Around here, a new Chevy truck bed has wheel well rust in about 18 months.

Have you asked your dealer or other local business which provides these services?

I drove a 2010 Camaro SS 6 speed car for 8 years as a daily driver. I also used it for my job as I am a traveling repair man. I carried Parts in the trunk for extra traction in the snow. I used blizzack Snow tires. I live near Rockford Illinois and there is plenty of salt up here. When I sold the car with 92,000 miles on it there was not spec of rust on the body. Some surface rust on the under side but zero rot. I never had it rust proofed or protected in any way. GM does a pretty good job protecting the Camaro from the factory. Have you seen any 5th gen Camaros with rust holes yet? I have not. I'm sure the 6th gen Camaro is just as if not better protected from the factory.

I'm in Rockford frequently, I'm in the Quad Cities on I-80. Great info - thanks! Blizzak is my go-to tire also.

Most of our underside is alum or covered. I have driven winters for 6 years and wash the underside at the end of every winter and I have zero rust.

Awesome info, thank you!

What wheel/tire combo do you run in the winter?

Be careful using "rust-proofing" like we did back in the 70's & 80's... Modern cars have coatings even on the unpainted inner surfaces, "rustproofing" will likely plug designed drain holes and such actually making the likelihood of rust much higher... Haven't seen a car with "Ziebart" or "Rusty Jones" in decades... Like since the 80's or early 90's...

Don't waste your money. New cars (as others pointed out) come from the factory rust proofed. There is a reason dealerships try to sell you this crap when you purchase a car. HUGE money maker for them. They know they will never have to pay out for it. There is a reason they warranty it for 10 years. Because they know your car will not rust out from the factory in 10 years due to the rust proofing the manufacture already does.

Check out Fluid Film. Use it sparingly on bottoms of doors and underside lip of hood and trunk lids. These pinch welds are mostly where you'll see rust first.

If I drive in those conditions, I try to wash it (underbody) as soon as possible, then having a warm place to dry...

I've decided the consensus is that frequent undercarriage washes to remove salt is the best approach.

Do the plastic covers on the rear lower control arms collect winter debris? What's the best way to clean them, remove them every spring and clean?

I've been Googling around and it looks like I'll have to learn myself the hard way as everyone has different opinions.

In winter months I will wash my undercarriage maybe once a month and report back in 15 years on how it's holding up

I live in the south, but bought this to easily wash the underside of our cars. They sometimes salt our roads.
