Like I said, deal of the century for $1k. I don't get why people are downplaying the brakes or the value. It's not going to be Worse than the copper ones, and if you end up replacing the copper free pads with normal ones that perform better, well now they're just clamping down on massive rotors for even more stopping power. We all know in emergency situations, that extra foot or two can mean all the difference.

Safety, value, and did I mention they look awesome in how they fill out the 20" wheels?
I think some people dont realize what an upgrade this is for the money. As Fran pointed out, it's cheaper than the 1LE brake upgrade. It's almost like a mistake.

I'm almost sure someone at gm messed up spec'ing this new option. There should be no way they're offering a larger-than-ZL1 brake package for just $995, when the regular upgrade to a smaller, SS 1LE sized kit is north of $3k. I know the copper-free pads that come with it aren't as good, but come on, swap the pads and you suddenly have the absolute best OEM Camaro brake configuration.

I think the overall situation is if they didn't have these brakes, they wouldn't be able to sell them in CA and WA, and if they needed to basically raise the price of SS's by thousands of dollars, they also wouldn't be able to sell it, so they're either doing this as a loss, or just for the literal cost of the package, so they can sell it. Either way, it's a win-win for anyone who is keen enough to choose the option.

Others are too busy knocking on "commie-fornia" to know this is actually a great thing for buyers.

I have a very similar question and someone earlier in the thread was talking about the copper-free option being a minor upgrade for ss 1le. So, does the $500 dollar copper-free brake system upgrade change the SS 1LE 2-piece rotors and calipers into the larger ZL1 2-piece rotors (about an inch diameter wider) and calipers? And if that’s true will the 1LE logo still be painted on the calipers after upgrading? Thanks y’all.

By choosing the copper free version on an SS, you will get the largest brake rotor and pad system available on any Camaro. The only difference between ticking the option on an SS, and the one that's included in the 1LE, is the calipers are red on the 1LE instead of black. Id be lying if that also wasn't a consideration when going with the 1LE package.

I can confirm on my own car, it has the 1LE stamped on the calipers

Fantastic! I plan to supercharge after warranty so the larger breaks will be ready for that.
Thx

I was looking to upgrade brakes and it's my understanding there are only 7 RPO codes for Camaro brakes starting in 2021. I understood the copper free upgrade does nothing to increase the size of brake it's an added cost for requiring all the brake lines and pads to be copper free. Your local government adding cost and is required on all cars purchased in CA and Washington. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...86096-9999.pdf

Near the bottom of what you linked is this excerpt:

Question : To make a Camaro compliant with the Copper Free legislation, is it just a matter of changing the brake pads?

In order to maintain the same braking performance, the brake components have to grow in size and therefore, brake pads compliant with copper free legislation will not fit on Camaro models with traditional copper-containing linings.

Keep in mind, the LT1/V6 Body already comes with copper free brakes. The problem is they are puny, especially the rears which are comically puny. Therefore these versions have no copper-free option to tick. You cannot get a BBK on these, just the fronts only, I believe.

That article doesn’t mention rotor or caliper size. And the government doesn’t add additional costs GM does.

Yeah this sounds like a win for SS guys. Do it and swap out the pads. I’m a little jealous I paid $3k for my 1LE brakes lol.
