Am I being anal about the splitter?

I’ve got less that 500 miles and it already got road gunk stuck between the splitter and the bumper which of course is pitting the bumper. I’ve never had a splitter before so I didn’t think about this being an issue. I had a white one before and the road rash was a bummer. I’m thinking of taking the splitter off except for special occasions and getting a clear bra. I know I can count on you guys giving me you’re opinions.

If it's the 1LE splitter like I have, it's not really something that can be taken on and off easily. There's a good deal of 3M tape if I'm not mistaken.

It depends what you want to do, but I think it makes the look of the car. I haven't driven in any excessively dirty conditions, but in the last year and a half it has stayed pretty clean, nothing a good wash can't remedy.

You are not getting that splitter off. It is taped, bolted and riveted in and very hard to remove. Its not something that can be taken off and the car look ok. there will be holes all over

I wouldn't worry about it unless you're going to be exhibiting the car on a concourse or something for ribbons, or saving it for the next guy.

It's nice to prolong it being "as nice as possible" for as long as possible, but don't let it detract from enjoying as much as possible.

I vote: Just drive it

When I added the GM ground effects the PPF went on the next day....

Don't take that splitter off, that's a very bad idea. PPF is the way to go, and if anything lodges between the splitter and the bumper (you should have a layer of tape between them, by the way), you blow it out with the power washer. I definitely wouldn't sweat this.

One thing you might want to do, though, is to protect the bottom of the spliiter with something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09KZHFR99. It saved mine a few times already on bumpy roads and in the occasional steep parking lot/driveway situation.

Thanks guys. As a follow up, it’s a 2SS CE, I’m thinking now there won’t be a next guy for a long time. There were several pieces of grit stuck between the splitter and the bumper I had to pry out with a razor knife. I want my cake and eat too. I want to drive it but I’d love to keep it as pristine as possible.

I don't think I have crap stuck in mine after 3800km. Are you talking in the wheel well or something, or actually in the front of the car?

I suppose I do drive very carefully, leaving room between the car in front of me, and avoiding where rocks build up on the road so I don't have to hear shit hitting the wheel wells.

I had my splitter off to replace it. The stock splitter is held on with double-sided tape and rivets. You need to drill out the rivets to remove. I followed GlenA's advice and used braided fishing line to "saw" through the adhesive tape. also following Glen's advice, I used plastic push rivets to install the new one, minus the tape. The idea being you can remove it more easily for cleaning later on. Never had it off since.

I had cracked the splitter, and once I had it off, I wished I had saved all the bits. It is all ABS. A bit brittle, but that plastic responds well to solvent adhesives. Sand it up and repaint and I'd have a nice spare.

Don’t blame you. Maybe try the fishing line technique to remove anything that gets lodged in there. Some stren 10lb test. I used it to take off the lame badges on my 98 z28 and installed 69 z28 badges.

I am guessing you already tried hitting it with a pressure washer.

It will likely take you over an hour just to scrape off all of the adhesive foam tape residue after you have the splitter off. I used a plastic razor blade and a lot of Mothers R3 spray but there might be a better spray to use. There were 4 rivets to drill out on my 2017 and those holes are visible with the splitter removed.

I used 20 lb test fishing line with gloves so it didn't dig into my hands. It broke about 10 times during the sawing process. I also used a snap blade utility knife to cut some of the foam while pulling the edges of the splitter away from the car so the metal didn't scratch the paint.
