But no, it's not a federal or industry requirement.

For any kind of camera replacement of the side view mirrors, manufacturers and the entire global automotive industry would have to work with each individual state to overturn each of their individual laws so a vehicle can be present on public roads without the required side view mirror(s) attached.

I doubt there will ever be a deviation from the current standard of regular reflective mirrors mounted on the doors. Cameras can break, the display can break, anything electronic can break. A mirror is always on and will never break unless it's physically damaged. At which time LEOs can physically see you're missing your mirror or that it's damaged. An electronic camera would not be seen from the outside very well if at all.

Our rear view camera mirrors can be switched off to a standard reflective mirror for that reason.
Federal standards do exist for 'minimum' requirements. Link here for NHTSA: https://www.federalregister.gov/docu...ear-visibility

Excerpt: "Currently, FMVSS No. 111 requires that all passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, school buses, motorcycles be equipped with one or more rearview mirrors for rear visibility."

Mirrors don't "go bad" like cameras can, so the current "request for comments" from NHTSA will likely take into account a need for any camera-based system to fall back to reflective glass...

At night, I really like that it dims the brightest headlights behind you far better and quicker than the auto-dimming mirror part does.

Best is that it is in addition to the auto-dimming mirror rather instead of it.

At first I found it strange to look at the rear view mirror (video screen) too, but after using it for a while I no longer notice the strangeness. After thinking about it, it occurred to me that with a mirror your eyes will focus on what you are looking at in the mirror (far away), but with the camera your eyes focus on the video screen (not far away). At first I was constantly refocusing my eyes with I looked at the rear view mirror, but now I do it automatically and don't notice it any more.

As said it is all but impossible to use with the top down but you can flip back to normal mirror mode and with the top down the rear pillars are not there so it is easy to see all around the car.

With the top up it took me a day or so to get used to the camera mirror but I am in the camp of "I like it". Good wide view.

Remember you can adjust a few settings.

I remember looking at a Saturn (car) out of College YEEEEEAAAARSSSS ago, the passenger side view mirror was an option, and I believe an option only on the higher level modes.

I walked out.

I have tried it with the top up and can agree that it's at least a usable option without the glare. I don't drive with the top up, though (I bought the car to drive with the top down), so that's why I would prefer to have the GDO option instead.

I can somewhat agree, I was quite pissed (my fault for not knowing) that I had to hang a garage remote off my 2020 vehicle visor.

I find it hard to believe they could not find the real-estate to add the remote. I am sure it was $$.

Edit: I did modify my Craftsman clip to fit our visors. Even added wrap to protect the plastic and visor.

Mine is completely buried and hidden under the steering column. If you don't know where to reach to find it, you'd never know it was there.

Same here... I wish my '16 had the rearview mirror camera. I took a '20 for a test ride and loved it.

I used 3M double sided VHB tape to stick my garage remote under the lid of the center counsel. It's out of the way and 'hidden' unless you know it's there. Easy enough and doesn't take up valuable real estate!

Screens very close to your eyes are only good until you turn 40, ask any ophthalmologist, which is another consideration. (No need for snarky responses, I didn't believe it in my 20s or even my 30s either...)

IMO autopilot tech will become the standard sooner than a complete elimination of optical rearview mirrors occurs.

I have heard some complaints of the mirror not looking good because of the wonky depth perception.

Don't know that myself, however. On the 19, you don't get the camera if you get the 1LE package. Retrofitting costs 2000+ dollars so no thanks.
