Oil consumption

Hey guys,
Was driving around yesterday for a few hours, hit the grocery store on my way home. When I got in and started her up, got a low oil warning on the dash. Only a couple minutes from home so babied her there. Have 3 quarts left over from the last oil change so no biggie, put in 2 full quarts and it got it to half way on the dip stick.

3k miles since last oil change, right at 8k on the odometer. Oil changed at 500, 1500, and 5k miles. Never had this before, didn't even have to add oil from 1500 to 5k and when I checked it before it was changed, still full. Car is completely cool now when adding oil, not warm at all per manual.

Anyone else have this issue? 2 quarts is kind of a lot to me, I know it takes around 10. No other issues or wierd noises. Made me a little nervous

Depends how hard you drive it. There could be some blow by I have had to add some here and there. Gotta keep an eye on it

Just monitor it going forward. Look for leaks/oil stains on the ground in the morning when you first fire it up.

I drive my with lots of spirit and I had quite a bit of oil in my catch can in less than a thousand miles of driving after I installed the catch can.

Definitely my bad for not checking it sooner, and will be keeping a closer eye on it. Would like to add a catch can, possibly voiding the warranty somehow with it is the only reason I haven't. Running the 0-40 esp oil also if that makes a big difference. Definitely no leaks as it sits in the garage with tan epoxy and haven't seen a drop. Thanks guys

MY SS used oil between oil changes in the neighbour hood of 1/2 Liter over 5000 miles. Untill the 35000 mile mark, now it uses no oil at all between oil changes. My theory is that these 6.2 engines take a while to fully break in. Synthetic oils are part of the issue, they are just too good.

I switched my 2018 ZL1 to the 0w40 ESP2 2 oil changes ago. I am now at 14k mile mile and I have had to add a quart in between oil changes. Seems to need another quart after about 3000 miles.

I do not recall this being the case with the original 5w30 formula.

No, there is no oil on the floor of my garage. I have seen others on the forum talk about this as well. My guess is that the thinner oil can get past the rings or valve seals and gets burned up... though I have no direct evidence of this.

I only know that the behavior started after switching oil viscosity. Since she is running great, it doesn't really bother me.

Should it?

Very odd that it would use oil now and not before as you say, at this mileage it should not change unless your tracking it or driving like that all the time !
Is it possible it did not get filled properly the last change, like short a quart ?

I always check the oil when I get it back from a change just to verify. I also provide the oil because I can get it discounted elsewhere. So I know for a fact they used 10+ quarts of my oil, at least I assume it was used on my vehicle. It's a weekend vehicle and definitely gets beat on pretty good. I now have my own garage and just put the vehicle up on Jacks. all fluid changes will now be done by me so I will be able to track exact oil usage. Catch can will go on when I start modding the car and void the warranty anyway

I change my oil every 5,000 miles with 10.5 quarts of Mobil 1. I add 4.5 quarts between each oil change and have been documenting this. I buy three 5 quart jugs every 5,000 miles and use it all. I essentially burn 1 qt every 1,000 miles. This is excessive and i will present this to the dealer before my warranty on my 17 ZL1 is up in March. I've heard others have had engines replaced with this excessive use. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon.

I was told by someone else that it was not alarming for the car to use some oil. Depends on how hard your driving. I looked up another thread about our cars and oil consumption and it should not be using that much oil. I am going to let my dealership know in the spring. Gonna do a fresh oil change and bring it down. We could monitor it and document.
Good thing I have not done my catch can or pulley swap yet. Still got my warranty. I do want to get them in there asap but gotta make sure I have a healthy engine first

Mine uses alot of oil as well. If you have an A10 and use the paddles alot, I believe this increases consumption. Same case with my previous car, ctsv. That car had a catch can and when I used the paddles it would seriously fill it up faster than you would think it would.
