Header coatings?

Do any header companies sell their headers already coated? I was trying to find one but don't see one yet.

Thinking about either Kooks or TSP

Who have you guys used previously to coat your headers if you didn't buy that way from the factory. I always remember jet hot but who else is in the business.

Alot of speed shops can get it done maybe even a place that does motorcycles. I know jannety does it i want to say for around $300 for the set. I'll be doing mine shortly. Bought speed engineering headers, $375. Coat them, and i'll still be around half the price of the big name brands and the speed engineering are very good quality.

It is my understanding that it dramatically reduces underhood temperatures. It also looks cool as heck depending on the coating (Satin Bronze looks amazing). Uncoated stainless headers will change color and not always in a pretty way. If you prefer to have show quality details under hood or simply like a clean look, coated headers are a great way to keep a uniform look to the primaries and header flange.

It is not high on my list just yet but I would like to have mine blasted and coated in the near future. I am currently in the process of replacing all of the corrugated plastic wire looming under the hood with fresh black loom and tape. Much of the wire loom nearest my engine/headers crumble to dust with the slightest touch after years of baking. If you think long term, you are only doing yourself, your wires, harnesses, and connectors, etc. a favor by reducing temps as best as possible. Not to mention performance benefits, minimal or not.

With no hood ventilation underhood temperatures get oven-like on our cars. They did such a good job sealing our hoods that some people report reduced temps by removing the hood seal near the windshield, although I haven't considered going that far myself.

I guess that is another question. How much hotter is it under the hood and on the transmission tunnel inside the car? My monte with headers got pretty hot and I was wondering if our 5th gens are bad without a coating.

If you mean heat creeping in from under the car or through the floorboard then I haven't noticed any issues either before or after my headers were installed. It may be different if you have exhaust dumps, but if retaining rear exhaust exits there is no real noticeable difference. Temps will of course rise under hood with headers, but it didn't change a thing inside the car for me temp wise.

These cars are very well insulated and shielded for heat and NVH from the factory, especially in comparison to GM cars from decades prior. I used to have a 1980 Monte Carlo with uncoated headers, so I know what you mean. Heat felt like it was passing right through the firewall.

To keep under hood temps down. When my friend and I installed his long tube headers he did a heat comparison between stock manifolds and his Jet Hot coated SW long tubes. The manifolds after 30 minutes of driving were 500*F. After we installed his long tubes we drove the same route the same way and came back to his garage and shot the heat gun again, 400*F. That 100*F temperature drop coming off of the exhaust is HUGE for keeping under hood temps down and performance optimal.

Non coated longtubes will glow red and send a lot of heat into the engine compartment. The coating keeps the heat going out the exhaust not into the engine bay. LT non coated will run hotter than stock manifolds. I didn't get a chance to check the temp on mine before the coating, I should have.

Well I pulled the trigger on TSP 2 inch headers. I was going to do the install myself but I am having a few medical issues lately and didn't want to mess with getting under the car. So I figured it's my birthday this week and I am going to treat myself.lol

J-Rods speed shop in Houston Area(one of the best in the country I might add) is taking care of me. Should have headers on the car next week with a tune. Jr. says it should be good for 380rwhp.

He didn't think coating was necessary unless I really wanted to spend money. So I decided to forgo the coating and if I want it down the road when I eventually crack open the motor I will deal with it then.

Let you guys know how it turns out next week hopefully. He says it is going to be a WHOLE different car with tuning the tranny. 40+rwhp is a nice jump and it is going to make the car so much better to drive with getting AFM tuned out.

Tranny tune makes a world of difference man. The tune and longtubes are going to really wake this beast up. Be prepared for your foot to feel heavier all of a sudden.

I havent noticed any heat issues with my stainless uncoated headers
