Video
Here is a video clip of the car just idling. To me, it sounds like something is in there. Thoughts?

Tyler - it sounds cammed to me. and you said the idle was at 800-900 rpm... that is higher than stock which is normal for a tuned cammed car.
If you are going to pull a valve cover to check, just start by looking at the springs. Most guys that cam these put double valve springs in and are easy to spot. A few guys will put high lift behives in as well. The stock springs are most likely blue (could be yellow though). If you have stock springs, it probably isnt cammed unless it has a low lift cam like the GM Performance ASA cam which is only .525 lift.

Doesn't sound stock to me at all. Is it a L99 or LS3? Basically is it a stick or auto?
LS3 with exhaust work sound a little louder and a slightly rougher idle than the L99 auto with full exhaust. I would bet there is an aftermarket cam in it. It isn't huge but I would vote not stock for sure. Put it this way, my stock cam L99 with high flow cats and full catback is way smoother than that at idle. |

I am betting it is something between a Lingenfelter GT11 and a stage 1 cam.215-225 intake duration is what it sounds like to me from hearing it. Not huge but not stock.

It has a cam in it, can you call the previous owner to find details on it?

Yes that sounds cammed a larger cam would have to have a idle though in the more 950 rpm range with a similar sound or even more lope at that higher rpm, some people though want more lope and cam then under idle which is not exactly smart and does not help the car run well. I would say as others most likely you have milder cam, you have headers most likely and dual springs which will over time have to be changed out in increments of 25k miles or a little more....you could have a lower lift type cam that would be the hot cam or asa cam that can lope like that and have a better than stock performance for HP and not have to change the springs out as often ….and knowing what cam you have is pretty important BTW.... especially how many miles are on the springs. If you have a lower lift longer duration tighter LSA cam you could be using just some beehive springs and not worry about changing the springs for like 100k, but then again....you have to know what you have.... though the stock cam will have some lope and the chop sound and some rocking at idle its not much...

If that's cammed, it has a baby cam or like someone suggested a "ghost cam" tune. Typically people add long tube headers or some sort of supporting mods to the list to support the cam which would make the exhaust louder, but that thing sounds so quiet that I would be more inclined to say the "ghost cam" tune or the very slightest minimal cam.
