Down to 2: 5th gen ZL1 or 2019 1SS
So after weeks of searching what I want to get with my 35k, I've kicked several options around but am down to these 2 fine automobiles. I threw out the challenger because it's just big and dated styling to me, BMW M3 is nice but I really want a muscle car, and mustangs don't have any appeal to me.
So, here we are: 1)5th gen ZL1(probably 2013) 2)6th gen 2019 1SS(would like to get a 1LE if I find a deal somewhere) What would be your suggetions? This would be a daily driver. I have an F150 that I would drive though in the rain/snow. The camaro would be doing 75% of my driving. I think that the ZL1 is more rare, would have some awesome supercharger whine, and looks pretty mean overall. I also hear it can be modified to put up some crazy HP for cheap. Cons are it's 6 years old, will have like 30k miles, who knows if the previous owner beat it, and probably would be a beast to maintain/repair. Also looks a little dated compared to new SS. The new SS would look great, be BRAND new with warranty, and is close to the performance of the ZL1. Cons are it's not a ZL1, not supercharged, and definately not as rare. Anyone own both? Anyone have comments? Last edited by Reaper_HWK; 03-20-2019 at 08:29 AM. |

2013 ZL1 1/4 mile time - 12.1-12.2 (580hp) 2019 SS 1/4 mile time - 12.2-12.3 (455hp) The 5th gen ZL1 had a bulletproof rearend and some really good qualities. The LSA engines can handle some serious power and the overall car was a nice ride. That being said, if I'm going to spend almost 40k on a car, I'd have to argue for the SS. Brand new, factory warranty, etc etc etc... and virtually the same performance. The big issue for me is that without having any background on the ZL1, it would be hard to argue for it. Plus, many places may not even want to finance that much money on a 7 year old vehicle.

I was in the same boat as you (throw in a c6 corvette into the mix also)... I ended up going with a new ss 1le because of the mylink system, the price I got it for, and the simple fact that I fell in love with the 1le package once I test drove one.
The ONLY thing that made me want the zl1 is the fact that it is much easier to modify for more power... Just food for thought.

2019 SS
Already mentioned reasons justify it. 6th Gen is a awesome platform, with enough refinement for DD even in 1SS form. Comparing to a used 5th gen ZL1 makes sense, but the risk of issues with comfort and performance/ durability are higher going to a 2013 model. |

I would choose the 19 1SS 1LE over a 13 ZL1.
That said, I still love the 5th gen ZL1. Even though it's older and about the same performance wise, it's still a great car. The warranty and new technology of the 2019 is what would push me to the 2019. |

However, with the xtra 100hp wouldn't the ZL1 spank the SS in a 50mph to 100mph romp? Which one has more "throw you in the seat" if you gun it at 60mph? |

The gth gen 1LE weighs about 400 pounds less than the 5th gen ZL1 so that will come into play as well.

You should be able to get into a 2013 ZL1 way less than $35k. I traded my pristine '13 vert M6 with 19k miles and a few cosmetic mods for $32k almost 2 years ago. Dealer sold it a week later for $35k.

And really, that's the major difference between the two... Both are going to have good power all throughout the power band. The ZL1 may feel more brutal, but it wont be that much faster, if any. The ZL1 would probably feel more like the Challengers to you, as it is a heavier car.

He could probably wheel/deal, but unless you want a car with more than 30-40k on it....

Get the new 2019....nothing like a new car that is yours from day one.

But the ZL1 has more of the old school vibes, Better looking (only by a little, IMO), has more room inside, and will hold its value much better, and be better equipped than a 1SS. The SS will get better gas milage. ZL1 by a mile. Especially considering depreciation and the more exclusive ZL1 factor. A much smarter buy. I prefer the '14-15. The tail lights look great to me and the infotainment is better on the 14-15.
