So...the original TPMS sensors will reset even if you keep them in the same tire location with the new tires? I was not aware that you had to re-learn the sensors if you just replace tires.

no they do not reset on their own. these sensors are simple. they broadcast a signal at 315mhz. each sensor has a serial number and pressure it sends to the computer in the car. When you program the sensors the computer knowes were they are because you program them in sequence drivers front, pass front, pass rear, then drivers rear. thats how the computer knows were the sensors are. the computer will read those sensors as long as its near the car. If you say put the drivers passenger side tire on the drivers side it will still read that tire as being on the pass side. You have to reprogram whenever you replace the sensors or change the position of the tires.

True, but each time you change tire position, you need this cheap gadget to reprogram position, that is if you are doing rotation or other work in your own garage.

yes? what JCunningham says...?

I haven't tried that particular gadget yet, but i have a 2017 Volt where I did own rotation and now positions are wrong on display, and then if I ever get a second set of wheels and tires for the 1LE, then I suppose it would be useful there as well.

Right, so I'm wondering why the OP getting a new set of tires would necessitate changing the TPMS in any way. Each original TPM should still be in its correct position right?

tpms sensors live on the valve stem. so getting new tires can easily result in new positions on the car if they're not keeping track. and nobody keeps track.

You should be able to force a reset on the dash when viewing the tire pressure and re-learn the positions without the tool. It's just a bit more time consuming because I think it involves dropping pressure until the car honks and so on for each sensor. The tool allows you to skip that and turn it into a 5 min job.
