Nice sharp images with good composure. I am a retired professional commercial photographer. These days, I shoot mostly with my phone though and the models are more often my dogs than actual pro talent, LOL.

The skateboarder and the surfer are superb work.

I try to shoot anything automotive and am building a portfolio. My Flickr has all my unedited JPGs just so people have track photos.

Yeah, I've been using the phone a lot too. You can get some pretty darn good shots with a phone, they just have their obvious limitations...

Phone megapixels are there, but limited by the quality of the "glass," obviously not L lenses or equivalent (depending DSLR brand you choose). Phone shots for family stuff and web use, though, pretty darn impressive these days. Amazingly, some of the smart phone app editing programs can get a job done well too.

Today's DSLR's make taking photos easy. Anyone can do it and make nice photos. The real pro understand composition and when and how to do and use what. You've got that. Keep it up!

In rained and puddled there if you're talking about the huge splash of water prior to entering the grid.

The older ones are at RPM in Iowa and the newest are at MPH in Nebraska

Makes taking photos easy.. to a point. You still need to know the fundamentals.I know plenty of people that have more expensive equipment than I do and use about 1/5th of its potential. I like to shoot in manual mode most of the time. But thats for what I do. Motorsports photography mainly. And nightscapes. Plus no phone camera is going to have the dynamic range and crispness of a DSLR with good glass. Although they have made great strides in the ease of editing software for phones.

I agree, in a weekend at the track I take anywhere from 1500-2000 photos because everything happens so fast that rolling shots become hard to track. So DSLRs make it easy to shoot a lot to get great shots, but 70% of the shots do not turn out all that great because the car is not in full frame, parts are blurred, wrong camera setting, etc.

I'm not a pro at all I just like to shoot cars and am trying to get better but my approach is keep shooting and hopefully you'll be at the right place at the right time. From my last event these are my unedited favorites, the Viper is printed and hung on my wall.

Exactly, which is why I said, "The real pro understand composition and when and how to do and use what."

My point:
If I handed someone my SLR back in the day, ASA25 slide film, it is likely they could not set the camera and take a decent picture (would they even screw on or drop in the right Cokin filter?). Fast forward to today. DSLR set to a Program mode. They're likely to at least get a good snapshot. Beyond that, obviously shooting full manual, having the fast prime lenses, and understanding composition (which includes lighting) is vital in separating the great photo and the professional shot.

After that, the only other ingredient that is as important as photography skill becomes the skill to do business and to market. I've seen some really cruddy photographers booking huge commercial work. For them, it's all in how they market what they've done.

Plus gives me something to do while I'm not out on track. Didn't want to step on the track photographers toes but one of the organizers is giving me a press pass for the next event since she liked my work. The Lotus going through the pond prior to grid is her favorite.

Once I process last weekends event I'll post up some of my favorites from that one as well.
