Street S/S vs Street R
Probably asked 100 times - but given the carcass is supposed to be the same, as is the compound, on the street and track, will the S/S be something like 80-90% the grip of a Street R, or is it like 50%?
I dont launch real hard, but it is still a 800+HP 4000lb car, so I am doubling down on a more serious setup than my 20" NT555Rs I run more on the street than anywhere, but get caught in the rain every now and again. So i am trying to get a feel for the trade off (and how much there is) for the rain grooves

Getting caught in the rain with the R's wouldn't be good.

I have run both on my car. Rs hook better, are lighter and provide a better 60ft time at the track. SS give you a little of both, decent at the track and still streetable, not something you want to drive rain as a matter of choice but work well enough if you get caught in a down pour as I have a few times. If you want the best track performance Rs hands down. If you want something for both the street and track SS are a good in between tire.

I have had the 17 inch version of both on my drag pack (which I usually drive to the track on even in some wet conditions) and I will never buy the MT Street S/S again only the Street Rs.
I was worried about the wet conditions, street manners, and tire wear (especially driving to an from ATCO) of the Street Rs until I actually tried them and I found that as far as my experience the Rs were just as good as the S/S on the street and the tire wear has also been comparable to the S/S. The Rs however have performed much better at the track than the S/S tire could even hope too also not giving up anything on the street and being Cheaper and more availability (S/S usually out of stock also some production issues with the 18 inch and above) the Rs are the choice for me going forward. I've had both 17 and 18 inch versions of the MT Street S/S and was not really happy with either (the 18s were a bitch to balance also and vibrated more than the Rs) but I've been very happy with the MT Street Rs. I've also tried the 17 inch Hoosier X275 .... sorry they suck ass I took them off after a month .... Terrible on the street and not even that great at the track and the tire wear was complete TRASH on these (the MT Street Rs are just wayyyy better). my little opinion/experiences. -Jon

The R is probably the best hooking street legal drag radial. However I have had nothing but issues with MT tires balancing but I have not tried the R's. For the street I like Nittos. Smooth, balance well, decent tread life. You might consider trying the new 555r II. Supposedly improved dry traction with no sacrifices else where.

I am happy to report though the MT Street Rs have be easy to balance and no weird vibrations or feeling like the ducking tire is coming apart like the S/S. I had the Nitto 555r II also the orginal 555r on my 03 Cobra and they were GREAT on the street one of my fav street drag radials ever but at the track they were just ok (but then again my 03 Cobra is in the 700+ rwhp /crazy tq range so duh yeah you'd need to step up from the Nittos at that power level). -Jon

If you get caught in an actual rainstorm with the ET Street R, they are horrible, from firsthand experience. For your desired use, I think that something with some tread will be a better choice.
