Bmr suspension or my shocks?
First let me start off by saying I’m aware there are MULTIPLE threads about this subject as I’ve been researching all of them to pinpoint this issue.
My car has full BMR suspension, caster camber plates, front and rear sway bars with end links, rear toe rod, top and bottom trailing arms and upper control arms. My springs are stock and shocks are stock. I had the car sitting on some spicy negative camber for about 6 months now. And recently installed a zl1 add on tow hook for the LT1. Originally I thought it has to be the tow hook adapter plate or bar touching something. So I located my horn and seen it was resting in between the two bolts…that didn’t stop the noise so I ruled that out. I got brand new sway bar end links from BMR slapped them on preloaded the suspension and adjusted per BMR instructions. I’m at a lost as to what is making the noise, it’s a clunking metal on metal noise. It started off a few months ago as a styrofoam rubbing together noise. Front and rear. Now it’s still the styrofoam noise in the rear but I know I need to add a washer to my rear sway bar bushing mount (just haven’t gotten around to it). I checked everything all of my torque specs are okay nothing is lose nothing is touching. I’ve ruled it has to be my shocks from sitting at such an aggressive negative camber for so long they wore out. Any ideas or suggestions. I cannot get the noise to duplicate unless it is actually driving. I’m 210lbs I bounce this car with all my might and weight and no noises but as soon as I’m driving even 5 mph it’s just clunky. My last resort is to get new shocks and see if that fixes it. I also put the car back to normal camber and the noise kinda got worse which leads me even more to believe it’s the shocks. Tempted to take all of the BMR parts off due to this noise. |

No poly cradle mounts, just changed the front sway bar end links which is the only bmr bushing on front. The back isn’t as noisy as the front and as I stated above I just need to put a washer on the rear sway bar bushing to fix rear noise.
It’s either my control arms or my shocks. Found my coolant reservoir has a lot of play, there’s 3 studs that hold it in position one with a nut one with a rubber boot and the other one is metal on plastic makes a lot of noise so I ordered another one of those rubber boots and will be placing it there. Filled coolant reservoir and bled my coolant via the owners manual instructions. Seemed to help the noise a tad bit but until the rubber boot comes in won’t know if the reservoir is the issue. I’m still leaning towards my shocks. |

Similar was my bar sway bar needed the washer under the lower bolt, the clamp had it so tight that the bar wouldnt rotate, tried all the greases, too. washer fixed it. When disconnected at the end links you should be able to freely rotate end bar arm through its axis.mine would barely budge that way.i tried a graphite impregnated bushing and hardware which didnt solve anything either. Sounded like styrofoam, too. Lsid under that car snd F’d with all of it before that.
Cradle lockout, nonadj bar w adj end link's, upper control arm, upper/lower trailing arms, front cradle braces. |

Welp…figured it out… after countless sleepless nights (just kidding) I figured it out! Turns out it’s not my suspension it’s not my shocks it’s not my wheel hubs…I recently put new brake pads and rotors on my car…mind you I have the 6 piston 1le brakes on my car so when I got the new rotors I purchased a set of z17 powerstop pads to eliminate the brake dust issue you get with the oem pads… you know that saying “all parts are not made equal” well this is a case of that. On my passenger side my pads were loose but not due to any install error or anything wrong just seems like they are maybe 1-2mm smaller in length then the oem pads or a set that is made correctly. The driver side pads don’t make any noise and seem to fit perfectly… I took the pads out and greased everything and re-installed them. Noise is gone for now…if it returns I will try the power stop pads again might upgrade to the z26 pads or just stick with acdelco pads. Let’s hope the noise doesn’t return.
Wish I would have checked all of this before ordering new sway bar end link bushings and new wheel hubs. Quick waste of $300 but I’ll just keep the wheel hubs for when it is time to replace them. |
