Cams.....Help Me Please

Ok, I'm confused and lost. So, what is a good cam manufacturer for our cars? How much should they cost? Can anyone comment on what they spend for the cam, tuner dyno costs? Should I buy into additional components to support it?

As King stated your first thing you should present is your goal for the car to include the future plans for the car/build (I.E. daily driver, road course car, drag, time attack, and Naturally Aspirated or Forced induction build.

I have an 18' SS 1LE. Just a light NA build for HPDE events and general fun. Not extreme barely drive able but moderate I guess? Strong lobe sound would be nice. I'd say 500 - 530 whp I'd be happy with. I can't remove the stock headers or cats.

I have no idea even what a good manufacturer is. Also, this spring I'm putting a AWE track exhaust on with link pipes just to make it louder IDK if that factors into anything

you not gonna get 500-530 with just a cam and tune and no headers or e85 or head work

house stark krops camaro has a point with just a CAM upgrade it will be a stretch to hit any where near 500 with just a cam change. id suggest getting on contact with a few of the reputable gen 6 builders out there and they can set you up with a cam and small build to meet your goals or get you as close to it as possible given your limitations on removing the stock headers and cats. Pray Performance, Gwatney Performance innovations, Vengenance Racing, Texas Speed and Performance , and Jannetty Racing are some names off the top of my head who i would recommend reaching out to. i Personally recommend Pray Performance as he was local to me at the time and everyone i knew or associated with recommended him.

my buddy pete did cams and heads and e85 with intake and headers on his ss 1le and he made around 520whp but almost spent around 8000$ or so

i've had good cam and head experience with texas speed. Have their torquer v2 and stage 1.0 799 heads on my LS1 camaro. All the supporting parts is what cost the most money.

You do a cam on the 6th gen your looking at replacing: valvespring, lifters, pushrods, possibly rockers if you upgrade, plus the DoD delete. Then you have the gaskets, probably want to do new lifter trays while your in there. Might as well do Heads while since your replacing the valvetrain. I don't know what the stock injectors are rated too, maybe want a higher flowing fuel injector. Speaking of higher flowing, you can't just stick with the stock intake manifold, gotta let them heads breathe with the new cam. Hell you'll need a larger throttle body too. Oh Dont forget about the longtube headers so that bad boy can exhale some heat. Finally you'll need a tune, then you'll be done. $5k later.

Point is, I would save up for everything and do it all at the same time. Oh and it's expensive. Don't skimp on inferior parts, Get the quality parts or your going to be spending more money tearing into the engine once again.

My naturally aspirated build and costs is below.

Given your parameters you have to go with a smaller comp cam, AFM compatible. There are a few other AFM compatible but even Texas Speed does not list their AFM cam anymore. So back to comp cam,
IMO you have to go with the two smaller ones as IMO the bigger cams require springs too stiff for the AFM lifter (all this is because to change the AFM lifter requires you to remove the head). So we take the bigger of the two (smaller cams).
https://www.compcams.com/xfi-afm-216...lt1-gen-v.html

That is a 226 / 228 cam on 116 LSA, should work with a good single beehive spring able to take .575 lift. Not too stiff or you are going to kill the AFM lifter. I'd stick with the stock 6600 fuel cut.

Should work well with any blot on or ported stock stuff. Cam is pretty small so you will hear some lope, but that is not going to be a slap you in the face take notice when you pull into the parking lot.
REQUIRES CUSTOM TUNING
Excellent Responsiveness & Mid-Range Power
Provides Across-The-Board Gains
Ideal for L83 & L86 Truck Engines

Here is a cam change with dyno on the biggest of the 4, this is a big cam and they are running some stiff conical springs. I would not recommend this due to weak AFM lifters.

Super Chevy mag got 37 HP from cam, and 20 something more by adding a free breathing air filter, I think the cam pulled to 7000 RPM. No dyno on thier site anymore:

MODS TQ HP 60-FT E.T./MPH
Baseline 395/4600 397/5900 1.82 12.13/116.64
ARH Exhaust/Tune 413/4700 413/6000 1.86 11.76/120.98
M/T Drag Radials 1.68 11.47/119.32
Comp Cam, Springs 413/4800 450/6400
Halltech Air Intake 424/4900 471/6100

IMO, backed up by fullbolt ons you should see 35 to 45 WHP from this stang II cam. It is a small cam, but the factory cam was tiny

DOD/AFM Compatible
DOD Lobes: intake/exhaust
Duration @ .050 valve lift 219 / 231 Lift with 1.8 rocker .576 .576 LSA 116

Non DOD Lobes: intake/exhaust
Duration @ .050 valve lift 217 / 229
Lift with 1.8 rocker .576 .576 LSA 116
Lingenfelter GT30 Camshaft GM Gen V Engine LT1/L83/L86
Suggested for normally aspirated engine applications with stock cubic inch, or larger cubic inch applications desiring a non-aggressive idle.

I'm going by memory but I think it was an option on their 600 engine HP had this as the optional cam, so that is 150 HP from cam, heads, tune, green air filter.. on a Vette
I'm just posting what the vendor says.

I appreciate the info everyone and suggested guys to get in contact with. So in short Cams are expensive and will make the car not street legal to get enough power to justify them? I need to make sure it still passes Inspection. Ohio has the very annoying E-Check such a cash grab scheme for the state.

So let me do some math, no labor.
Cam $550
springs $150
Tune $ 350 to $700 depending on how and if you want some hardware
Since you are not removing the heads $20 gaskets
22 degree restrictor $70
$1500, I'd say to change the cam from the front dunno 10 hours @ 110 / hour is $1100
$2600. I'd make sure you are all set on your bolt-ons or you will be paying for a retune.

I would do CA front cat deletes, move the 02 to behind the rear factory cats. for your m6. Green filter and a cut bottom box, pray ported intake and TB. So say dunno $1500 more.
