Things Are Getting Hot!!!

I melted another GM Part!!!!! (First being the engine wiring harness). Took the car in for upgraded brake lines and found this... cooked the coolant reservoir with my headers (coated for heat as well). Reservoir was completely empty and car has sat since track day in October so must have emptied on track or on way home.. shit happens. New one is getting heat shield..

2 inch headers from ARH.. Yall ever see this before?

Yikes!!! No, never seen that. I have the 2 inch ARH headers as well, been on for 8,000 miles. Just checked, no issue. Glad you caught it before any serious damage. The heat shield is a great idea.

Next time get them coated, Swaintech, I am running ARH also. I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money on getting them coated but the entire engine bay is way cooler near the headers noticeably compared to other cars I've had with LT headers.

I've never seen that, but I did unintentionally install the reservoir incorrectly when I did the headers (didn't line up the bottom tab correctly) and didn't notice it at first but did a few minutes later. It made the bottom of the tank stick out closer to the headers. Could this have maybe happened to you?

Also, was the bottom of the reservoir filled with coolant? These reservoirs are weird and just because the top is filled doesn't mean the bottom is and if it were empty in the bottom I can see the material overheating.

Modifications of this type most always have some risk.

I kept melting starters on my C6Z from tracking with headers. Sad to see this happen on the ZL1 but this is another reason I track it stock to keep the warranty. If the shield works you could help many people in your situation.

Does anyone know if the Moroso 63813 Coolant Expansion Tank will fit as a replacement to the factory plastic tanks? I just had headers put on mine and don't want to risk having this happen.

This thread has inspired me to buy some heat tape when I pull the trigger on headers in the coming months.

Yep it happened after a heavy track day, I do not believe this would be an issue for daily driving at all.

Coated headers still get hot enough to melt things, they are not a unicorn for zero heat. Put your hand on a non coated header up to temp, then a coated header up to temp, it they will both burn the crap outta your hand, same with plastic.
