No it's not. It's a 5th gen. In other words it's the next generation of Camaros that follows the 1992-2002 models. It just happens to take some queues from the 1st gen just like every other generation before this one did.

That being said i don't really like the idea of the hatchback

Careful, you'll end up being another candidate for early hearing aid use like so many of those I hear going down the road with earth shaking stereos (a hearing aid store would be an excellent "growth" business these days, plenty of up and coming new customers). Myself, I prefer the trunk as I've never liked a hatchback on any car I've seen it on, but that's just me.

I don't see much advantage, you aren't actually gaining cargo space and you would loose some frame rigidity which would mean inferior handling (it's hard to say how much but there would be some reduction). Besides when I think hatchback I think cheap car, and I bet a lot of people do. Having said that I'm not really against hatchbacks, Volvo's C30 for instance is something I wouldn't mind having for a winter car if they got the mpg's up just a bit more (or had AWD with the current mpg). But if you're going with a hatch the car should get the utility of a hatch, which would mean a very different design.

That's what gave Camaro it's uniqueness the past few generations, midsize cars rarely have this feature but even the fifth gen's design looks like it would take to a hatch feature well. Oh well...
Yes, a hatchback would have made the trunk actually usable.. You can barely fit anything large (good luck fitting a suitcase) thru the current trunk.

What good is cargo space if you can't fit anything large thru the opening...

that's why the seats fold down

personally i think a hatch is for cheaper cars, i like it on my friends scion tC but would HATE it on this car.

Just put your first few initial big items in at an angle with the smaller stuff on top, it looks like a lot will fit into the trunk with just a very small amount of planning in unless you are loading everything into moving boxes or somesuch.

Your image is EXACTLY how I felt it should have been from the time the concept was shown.

A hatch would be MUCH more usable than the tiny trunk opening...
