My car is honking at me as I’m tracking it!! what’s going on?!

I was driving my car hard around the track for the first time in about 1.5 years, and all of a sudden, seemingly randomly, my horn starts honking at me intermittently from time to time. I am absolutely sure I was not accidentally hitting the horn myself, my hands were exactly where they are supposed to be on the steering wheel. WTF?!

This happened a few times in the 2 1/2 sessions I tracked the car yesterday
before the car started to misfire and the check engine light came on. I doubt they’re related but I thought I might as well include all the information just in case. The car also said “upshift required, engine protection mode on” but it’s an auto that was never in manual mode… when I cleared the message it never came back… I am now ordering a new set of upgraded spark plug wires and plugs considering I have 2 inch long tube headers

Buts that’s a lot of odd stuff that happened. Any thought?!

Sounds like electrical gremlins from partially damaged wires or a loose connector... if you can think back, did the unexpected stuff always happen in similar turns at relatively high g's with the steering wheel locked to one end (or close to it)? Are your tires and wheels stock?

Also, since you are probably tuned for the headers, you should data log your runs with VCM scanner, identifying these problem spots may give you useful clues.

Maybe it’s just happy to be back on track after a year and a half *laughs*

Yeah I’ll check the video of the track day sessions

So far I’ve been told it could be a electrical ground issue; a wire not secured properly after the long tube headers were installed, so that’s what I’m gonna get checked first

my car honks at me when i reprogram the TPMS. Maybe you are triggering something on the TPMS setup on the track.

That’s good to know, I don’t have any tire pressure monitoring sensors for my track wheels, so maybe that’s it!

Or maybe it’s the fact that I put my key fob in the centre consul with my cell phone And it was making contact

So it turns out the misfiring is primarily being caused by the Kooks GESI green cats having melted after just two 20 minute track sessions, very disappointed that they failed so fast.

Also the spark plugs and spark plug wires were in horrible condition according to the dealership I take my car to. But I guess that’s not a surprise considering I have long tube headers on the car, despite that they are ceramic coated.

OK so it wasn’t my key fob causing the horn honking, it happened again but this time on the street and my key fob was in my pocket with absolutely nothing touching it.

Obviously this thread should not be in the road course and track section, i’m not sure if a moderator will see this and move it or how to contact a moderator to move it

have you noticed it happening more on left turns/right turns or will it just do it in a straight line? Has to be some sort of bad connection somewhere making a phantom "horn press" I would think.

So just incase I figure I mention it , you have 2" headers did your installer move the wiring harness on the passenger side. There been a couple guy that melted them because they did reroute the harness.

Seems to be on left hand corners, but it happens so infrequently that I cannot replicate it, though I have not been to the track again yet... The dealership already checked the the steering wheel regarding faulty connections but found no issue

I got the 2 inch headers done a year and a half ago so I would think if this were the cause that it would have come up early? Having said that I guess the exhaust would get hotter than ever on the track which s when this showed up (1st time back to the track in over a year)

My mechanics did find a wiring harness melting against the exhaust after the headers, but they said that was because the exhaust shop that did the work for the dealership (when removing my GESI cats) did not strap it up and out of the way properly which is why I'm getting a heat bank DCT code coming up since the car came back from the dealership last week.

Yep, that'll do it. While you're at it, you might want to also check for arcing plug wires, which can cause seemingly random intermittent misbehavior with the various electronics.
