Learned a Lesson Today: Winter Tires

IF that is what drag radial sway feels like... I'll never put drags on my car.

Winter tires on the back: 67 degrees F
Gas'd it a bit on the high way

I've never felt sway like that before. I didn't even make it past 85mph before I let off the gas. Literally threw my car left and right about 3+ feet almost like a fishtail.

Felt the rear tires pressed with my thumb at 38psi I was able to dent the rubber with my thumb with very little force.

That rubber is soft af!

Which winter tire did you have on it?

Ive previously run a Xi3 and found them to be amazing in the snow but the other times they were a huge PITA to drive on, so soft and squishy, took everything out of the car. I settled on a winter performance, the Alpin PA4 that is more capable than an A/S but gives up very little and makes the car still fun to drive.

You really shouldn't put winter tires on until the temps are below 40/45 F. Otherwise, you'll wear them out real fast. But yes, you're right....in the warmer temps they are very soft. I also live in Michigan, I usually don't put the snow tires on until December, unless we get a November snow.

We are going to drop below 30 deg F and fall into the 20's next week. I'll be switching to my Blizzak tire/wheel package this weekend. I'll get to see 4k+ RPM again in the spring.

Winter tires are VERY soft.

I found that I didn't need that much tire, I have 5-7 days out of the year that I need some snow capabilitiy, mainly to make sure that I can get home from work if it so happens. Most of my streets are relatively cleared in about a half day and/or I just stay home from work and take a little PTO. So, that was way more tire than I needed and like I said they sucked to drive on the rest of the winter season. A/S when I've had them on Mustangs and Genesis just didn't have enough confidence for me. But the Alpin PA4 has been fantastic for me.

Sadly, I need that snow and ice capability 5 days / week since I'm changing jobs to a more critical role.

I used to run Pirelli Sottozero 3 winter tires on my Mustang and Challenger, but the weather is bipolar. 20 degrees and snowing on Tuesday, 60 degrees and sunny on Wednesday. I eventually just went to all seasons.
I will say I never had traction issue on warmer days.

Oh brother. Winter tires means no slamming, not even half throttle probably But imagine passing AWD SUVs stuck during winter storm, lol. My buddy and I used to take our Challenger and Charger during snow storms to do slow but long power slides Laughing at AWD Equinoxes spinning all the wheels stopped at intersection...

I run blizzak LM32 for few seasons, never felt unsafe. They are very much FUN to drive since they slide so nicely. Doesn't help w wear at ALL! 2 seasons, rear set were toast!

I just bought these for my wife's Buick Regal GS AWD. These should make winter driving more fun!

+1 for "Winter Performance" tires like PA4 and Sottozero. Much better when the roads are dry but it's cold out, good in the snow but not quite as good as full-on snows.

I had the LM32, they sucked in snow. They could go fast in the cold, but that seemed to be about it, simply a high performance all season with winter compound.
