A little over a year ago I found the answer that has fixed my slow cranking issues. Check out this thread:

The short answer is I added a ground cable between the body and the engine and my hot start/slow crank problems went away. The details are in the thread I posted.

The starter is out of the picture once the engine is running.
Slow crank PLUS rough idle sounds like vacuum leak.
