Trans and Diff fluid change: car needs to be leveled?

Is it mandatory that the vehicle stays leveled horizontally when changing transmission or differential fluids?

I am planning to do these myself for the first time tomorrow and have heard people say that if you just raise the front/back, you risk not fully draining the old fluid. Is this true or am I okay raising just the front/back wheels up?

Thanks in advance!

As level a surface you can get is best.

Thanks MatthewAMEL, but I am referring to the car, e.g., for changing diff. fluid do I NEED to set jack stands at both the front and the rear of the car, or is it okay to lift just the rear?

You can probably get away with lifting the rear for the diff, but any angle will make it hard to fill the trans to the correct level.

For servicing my trans/diff, I pull the car up on race ramps and then put the rear on stands.

The easiest way to get the car close to level, while allowing room to work under, is to use race ramps on a mild decline. To change the rear fluid, set the ramps up at the rear of the car, backing down an decline while backing up the ramps. Do the reverse for the front of the car for transmission fluid.

Do you use wheel chocks behind the front wheels on the race ramps while you jack the rear up for the jack stands?

A little extra safety never hurts. Especially if the ramps aren’t sitting on a level surface.

I put the back on ramps, and then jacked the front up to level it out.

Interesting - Is there a point under the car to safely jack the car up from the front so that both front wheels lift up? Or would you have to jack one side at a time to get both jack stands under? Would you mind pointing out where that spot is located?

Changing my diff fluid next week and would be nice to get the car level
