Motor Trend calls the 6th Gen ZL1 a Supercar Destroyer!

I don't know if anyone here has seen this video from the Motor Trend YouTube channel. I couldn't find it here with a forum search so here it is.

Hell yes! I've watched it twice already. I was kinda surprised to see the M6 come in faster around the track at Willow Springs, though. It even beat the Grand Sport! I've been driving my M6 for over 3 mo. now and I know how fast it is and how well it handles but everyone expects the A10 to be faster.

If you read the article that goes with the video. Randy felt something wasn't right with the auto and worked out tire pressures over several more laps with the auto. The end result was a PDR timing lap that was a little faster than the manual. But since the magazine had packed up their instrumentation for the day. It can't be called an official time against the manual which did have the Vbox official instrumentation. In any case. Those times are what Randy can do with the cars. Us mere mortals would likely be a bit slower, and any time differences from auto to manual would be within a margin of error. Either one you have, it's a hell of a car.

I didn't see the related article linked in the YouTube description. I went to motortrend.com but there were so many ads that I just closed the page.

Anyway, I'd agree that 3/10 sec could be within the margin of error. If Randy felt the A10 didn't get a fair shake then I'd trust his judgement. Still, even after adjusting tire presures, that puts the A10 and M6 dead even. They're both in a league of their own - the "big leagues". One of the great things about the A10 is that those who can't or won't drive a manual will get to experience the awesome power and engineering of this beast.

Randy strongly felt there were some tenths left in the automatic ZL1. He worked with a couple of engineers from Chevy and kept adjusting tire pressures and lapping. The result? An unofficial lap time of 1:25.87, recorded on the ZL1’s optional Performance Data Recorder (PDR). A McLaren 650S Spider—a mid-engine, 3,239-pound, 641-horsepower, carbon-fiber supercar—does a 1:25.88. Yes, you read that right. The quarter-million-dollar McLaren got beat by a Camaro. But because our test team didn’t run the numbers—meaning we don’t have a Vbox data file of the lap—we have to asterisk Randy’s lunchtime lap. It’s simply not official. These things happen. But here’s the thing: You’re not supposed to mention Chevy’s other sports car in the same breath as legit, flat-out elite supercars such as the Chevrolet flagship. But if the lap holds, the ZL1 has the eighth-best lap we’ve ever seen around Big Willow and is less than a second behind the best we’ve seen from big brother Z06 (1:25.00). What a world. More important, what a beast of a machine.

The Automatic 1:25.88 destroyed the manual 1:26.16 lap time. unofficial time logged with the PDR.

^^^ What he said.

So what happened to that "margin of error"?

Agreed. I think the auto to manual comparison is pretty silly honestly. I'm betting on a shorter track the manuals will be a few tenths faster and longer tracks the autos may gain a few tenths. In either case, you'd not be really "destroying" the other guy with your couple of tenths here and there. Like i said, if you own a ZL1. It's a hell of a car. No matter what trans option you went with.

Now having said that.... Autos rule!!!

Super Car status was up until recently a factor of price and performance. The dividing line has become much more of a price issue as there a number of sub 100K offerings that will outperform many of what have been traditionally considered Super Cars. American offerings the likes of the ZL1, Z06, and to a degree the the GT350r have re-written the script here which is a huge credit to our American auto industry.
