Get a Catch Can or go Port Injection now
Just a reminder to everyone how cool direct injection is.
Even with a catch can to catch the oils you will still be getting some dirty carbon air which will eventually lead to this build up. Either screw over bambie and vent to atmoshphere or get yourself port injection. It isn't just German cars that have this problem, I gaurantee at 50-70k miles all direct injection cars that don't also run port injection and use a oem type pcv system will be pulling your intake manifolds and having walnut blasting done to your heads. My weekend over here pulling oem intake manifold, bottom manifold with tumble flap valve assembly (probably going to remove those as its a boosted car and I don't let it get vacuum often lol), having to reseal and clean injectors and pay someone to come out and walnut blast the intake ports clean again For you guys with a dry sump system, yes this applies to you also. My R8 V10 here is dry sump also.... |

bingo
This is no joke guys Audi quoted 1400-1700 to clean out highest quote from a independt shop was $2500 lowest quote $1200 I did all the labor pulling apart and have a porsche guy coming to clean it this weekend $200, even still will need all new injctor seals thats $40 per injector x 10...... Direct inject is cool till this happens. I'll say Ford is smart for them keeping port inject when going direct inject, and ZR1 vette won't have a issue either but everyone else get ready for some maintaince |

Let’s hope that in time, the need to have dual injection will provide some options on the market.

This. I would imagine there will be more options. Right now I would love it but definitely can’t afford it as a priority upgrade.

There is pics posted of a L86 that had 116k miles with the intake removed and the intake ports / valves looked really good. No catch can or anything. I still think a catch can is a good idea, but from what I have seen the Gen 5 small blocks seem to be better then many other DI engines out there in regards to this issue.

I took mine off at 15,000 miles it has a reasonable amount of build up, no catch can. My clean side has been vented for a long time. I'm going to run a catch can, but one that is sub $100.
Now GoertZ intake with twin injection, I'd run that just for crowd appeal, that thing is a work of art, I have my soul on the market right now just trying to get the money to get one. A clean intake would just be a side benefit. IMO 5 years from now, dual injection is going to be a standard, it maybe 8 constant flow meth injectors, but it will be something, considering the high flow direct injectors are $3500 and don't clean the intake. For $3500 I'm sure a proper 8 injector sheet metal intake with constant flow meth "injectors" can be engineered with a decent looking dual fuel rail.

Yea I agree dual injection is the future. Wish we had it on ours.

And as there are always those that claim "if it needed it it would come that way from the factory". But as we have shared for years, no. The cost is to high and most owners would not drain and care for it so don't look for anything but what they come with now.
Most catchcans only trap 15% or so of what enters them still allowing most of the offending compounds to still be ingested. Venting is horrible for the engine as it defeats the flushing and evacuation of these damaging compounds leaving them in the crankcase to contaminate the engine oil accelerating wear and shortening the engine life. Our E2 and E2-X Catch Can systems stops up to 95% of these and is the most effective on the market. We also maintain a closed emissions compliant system (except we are not CARB cert in CA). This design reduces up to 85% of these deposits. And no, no Automaker has a solution. This is just the reality now with all GDI engines. Tech questions? Please post engine with 20 to 40K and your catch can. Seeing is believing.

I’m using the e2-x on my car. Swapped it over from my last gen6 M6. That car only had 9k on it and I have the catch can on for about 5000 miles. I will say that when I took it off to swap it over I was a little surprised to see how much oil was actually in it. Whether it works better than others or not I don’t know since I have nothing to compare it to, but it’s been working great with my Procharged application.

Don't forget about cam overlap. The stock cam has overlap when you use seat to seat timing. So, no catch can will keep all the crap out of your intake ports. During the OL event there is reversion and unburnt gasses containing oil will enter your intake port. With out port injection that crap will get stuck to the hot side of your intake valve. Now, if you add a cam with say 23* of OL @.050" the problem will only compound itself. I believe in catch cans and run them on everything but you will never get completely clean intake ports or valves on a DI motor.
