Strange mark on my steering wheel

This strange mark appeared on my steering wheel while I was in a restaurant. I went in and ate. Came back out to my car. There it was. It kind of feels like a nail file. The windows were up and the doors were locked. Nobody could have got in.

Anyone ever see anything like that? Any thoughts on what could have caused it?

I've scratched my steering wheel a few time with the zippers of my jacket, most of the blemishes on my wheel are in that same spot. There is not much room for parking so there are times when I can't open my door all the way and I may rub against the wheel from getting in or out, or when grabbing something quickly and not paying attention.

It was probably there before and you never noticed it. I bought a Subaru a few months ago and the other day I got in it and saw the overhead airbag lights for the 1st time. I swear I never seen them before?

My wheel has a smaller mark like that on the bottom. I finally deduced that it was the clip on my pocket knife that did it. Its in my right pocket so when I get out sometimes the clip drags the bottom of the wheel has I pivot and climb out.

I'm assuming it was my cell phone holder on my right hip as I to have to pivot to get out of the vehicle. I couldn't replicate the action but I can imagine it scraping the steering wheel if I'm exiting quickly.

Time to file it away in the "who knows" file.

I know a very large deputy who, back in the revolver days, cocked his revolver in the holster the same way when he got out of a Caprice Classic.
