Time trial question (fastest tire over 1 lap)

So I'm in a bit of a decision point. An SS 1LE generally runs in NASA TT3 stock with Hoosier tires. For that to work your car needs to make around 405 hp or lower on the dyno. My car made 415 on stock tires. I returned to the dyno on my lighter apex wheels with slicks on to see if the higher rotating drag from the taller tire would help. But instead the lower unsprung weight made even more power on the dyno. Up to almost 450 from 415.

My options are just to run TT2(which is what I'll do for now) or I can use 200tw tires to drop back down to TT3. I was wondering what everyone's experience here with different tires over 1 lap. Options are

Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R/RE-71RS, BFGoodrich g-Force Rival S 1.5, Dunlop Direzza ZIII, Falken Azenis RT660, Federal 595 RS-RR, Goodyear Eagle FI SuperCar 3, Kumho ECSTA V730, Michelin Sport Cup 2/2 Connect, Nankang CR-S, Nexen Nfera SUR4G, Yokohama Advan A052/Advan Neova AD0

Plan is to run them on 18x11 wheels

Just run TT2 or go all out and run TTU.

Car just won't be competitive in TT2, especially without aero. I think TT3 generally has more people so it's more competitive also and you are eligible for tire perks, id rather run there. I'll either win TT2 competing vs 2 other people or I'll lose by like 3 seconds to someone making more power or running much lower weight. No point in running TT if I'm just turning laps for fun, id rather be near the top of the range.

TT Pace will be (fastest to less-fast; some packed into the same range; there are characteristics of each tire - so other things to consider beyond pace):

1.1 Yokohama Advan A052
1.1 Nankang CR-S
1.2 Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RS

2.1 Falken Azenis RT660
2.2 Nexen Nfera Sport R

i run sc3 in our time trails group in cali as we are limited to 200tw tires if i use 3rs i get bumped into the higher class and my pockets arent that deep lol

From what I've heard from someone running the A052 for TT is they work great the first lap so you better get everyone else out of the way. I have ran the RT660s and they are definitely faster than the G3s. They are good for 3 or 4 hot laps which works great for me. Side note about the RT660s, they are very loud driving on the street, especially on some types of rough pavement.

I haven’t checked the rules in TT, but that’s where I’m thinking about going as well. Any idea where a ZLE would fit?

I did get to test my street tires Michelin PS4s and I was surprised by the grip. Now they aren’t as good as 3Rs, but they did well surprisingly.

Not sure, you can check for yourself with the nasa calculator. My guess is TT2 if you use street tires and TT1 if you're using Hoosiers.

From the outside looking in, it seems to me that you need Hoosiers and front + rear aero to be competitive in NASA TT regardless of which class you run in because of the way the rules are written. You could detune to stay in TT3 but it is definitely not worth throwing away your powertrain warranty for that. Well technically competing in TT could probably be used as a reason to void your powertrain warranty too but if you don't mention it the dealership might not find out.

Running TT with an uncompetitive car might be the only way to get many clean laps at a NASA event depending on the track length and number of entrants in HPDE4. At my home track in Houston they started combining HPDE3 and HPDE4 into one run group and there are too many people on the 2.4 mile track to get many clean laps.

Yeah you're probably right about all of that. I think aero is necessary as well regardless of class. I'm trying to decide what I'll do. I would do gridlife or scca but they don't have that many events near me compared to nasa. I think I'll need 200 tw regardless though since you can't run slicks in any other org unless you have better safety systems. I'm just going to start tt2 with nasa and see what I want to do. Going to have to burn through these hoosiers regardless.
