ZL1 buyback title

Hello owners,
Would you buy a car that has a buyback title as engine failed and was fitted with a new one from Chevy?
Thanks for the advice!

I don't see anything wrong with that. New engine with less miles sounds like a bonus to me.

I don't think I've ever seen many posts about a failed, completely stock, LT4 in the ZL1.

I would if nothing else is wrong with it and you can get it for a damn good price. Under $35k I'd say is ok.

If you stayed within the US, then I would go for the deal because:

1. The motor was installed at a Chevy Certified Dealer; therefore, there is an extra layer of warranty.

2. The motor may be brand new due to not many LT4 motors just laying around.

3. If you have no intention of having this ZL1 to be a long term investment for collectability by having matching numbers, then it's cool.

If you don't stay in the US, then it is a deal breaker because:

1. Mechanical competency for a LT4 in a foreign country may not be accessible.

2. If you get stuck in the street, your GM dealer may be miles and miles away because, I imagine, there are very few GM dealerships around.

Just my 2 cents..

Ask the selling dealer (assuming it's a GM dealer) for a complete vehicle service history by VIN. That might give you an idea of what caused an engine failure which necessitated a new engine installation.

First thought comes to mind is valve spring failure or maybe the oil pump failed and the engine self destructed. A few C6 and C7 Corvettes have experienced that. A complete new engine installed by a GM dealer, with full explanation in the vehicle history report and a new factory warranty should give you confidence in the purchase.

The Op is in London so maybe it would be okay to get the car.

Not if you are out of the US. If you were in the states and close to a dealer I would have no problems with that if the price was low.

Asked the dealer for service history.
Engine was replaced by Chevrolet with a new unit.
Car is 2018 ZL1 1LE , planning on buying car and ship to UK.
Seems most will only buy it at very low price...it is priced at 54 , which is not that low...

It'd be more reassuring to know the reason for the buyback (e.g. fuel pump or oil pump failure) to be reasonably certain the new engine is indeed a complete remedy. Not sure how competent the dealer's service department is, hopefully they are able to properly service a ZL1, or if the dealer you mentioned is in the US, how easy it is to find a good one across the pond.

Other than that, I don't think $54k for a low mileage ZL1 1LE is bad, especially given the current state of the used car market. It's a track weapon that is a great deal at this price.

54K..........hell no!
You have no idea, what you are getting, regardless that chevy installed a "new" engine.
IMHO a "buyback" title is no different than a "salvage" title. The car is not worth that kind of $$!
