Yes it is a big deal. The ZF 8 speed auto is a top notch transmission and has been receiving a lot of accolades and awards. Its used in a large majority of moderately to high priced automobiles now day's like Audi, Bentley, BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, Jaguar, Jeep, Lancia, Land Rover, Maserati, Ram, Rolls-Royce, Volkswagen. It has allowed these manufactures the increase performance and mileage across the board.

A lot of performance enthusiasts perfer the ZF 8 speed over a 6 speed manual.

I just don't understand who has control of the naming of vehicles under the GM brand? I wonder what there reasons are.

Why does it have to be renamed at all? Commodore was just fine IMO.

Absolutely nothing was wrong with Commodore. Chevy Commodore actually has a nice ring to it, and Commodore fits in nicely with the naming convention of Chevy's 'performance' lineup (i.e. Camaro and Corvette).

why not just make a V8 Malibu option and bring back the Chevelle. nothing special about this "SS" should just leave the SS as a trim option IMO

Because a V8 FWD EpII Malibu would be really really stupid.

And as much as I agree that the car's name leaves much to be desired, you all do realize there's been a Chevrolet SS before?

Hey, why not? Apparently the plan is to upsize both the Cruze and the Malibu for the next iteration, just put Malibu on Alpha+ and give us a V8 Chevelle coupe.

Are you referring to the 2003 concept car, or the South African market car from the 70s?

yes it would be stupid I agree and I wasn't my intent to imply such a thing. I also did not know that there was an SS before but my opinion still stands. Hope this model works out for GM. It just doesn't appeal to me at all.

It is also the fact that gears can be spaced more tightly to keep it and it also allows higher OD gears for better milage. Mind you the 6.4 is already rated at 23 MPG with the old 5 speed auto and the SS is what, 20 with it's 6 speed? Also if it is not a big deal why is the Corvette, Cadillacs, and eventually the trucks getting rid of their 6 speed autos for 8 speed autos?
